My car got stuck in park several times, i'm the brake lights would come on but i couldnt push the button to make my car move out of park...there's a tab on the right side at the top of the gear shifter console pop it out, stick a skrew driver down in and that should release it if that's your problem...it's a little bit of a rig, but it works, havent been stuck in park since

it'sthe solenoid at the top of brake to be able to shift when thios goes out there is a little plug on the console on right side of shifter pull this out and take a screw driver or even a straw and push down you will be able to fill the lever when you push down this will let you shift normally til you replace solenoid.

I have this same problem. It has caused me to be late for work and almost lose my job!! My fix is just to leave in Neutral w/ parking break on when the car is off. It seems to be weather related because when the temp drops below 40 degrees, I experience this problem. To get it in to Neutral, you have to turn the car off with the shifter in park and the button pushed down. It takes some practice to get the hang of it, but it works everytime for me.

If the shifter moves and still doesn't shift try getting the neutral safety switch checked

I have a 2000 ford escort zx2 and the shifter won't engage unless I use the override button. What is causing my shifter not to work?

There is a solenoid lock which works on the brake light circuit, if the brake lights are working it is possible the solenoid has packed up. Need to check it's operation.

2003 crown victoria won't come out of park

Had a similar problem. Solved it two ways first place key in the 3 position move gear to N then start and it will shift easily. Second solution check brake light fuse, it is probably blown replace it and gears will shift OK.

2001 Escort ZX2: it wont go out of park...

There is a safety lock-out that keeps you from taking the car out of gear if you don't push the brake. If your brake lights still work then the switch is good. Also, some people have reported that if the high mount brake light is bad it will keep the car from being shifted out of park. If all of your brake lights work then the solenoid is bad. Remove the center console to get to the solenoid. Since the solenoid is expensive most people just zip-tie the solenoid open so that you don't have to push the brake to shift it from park.

2003 ford escort zx2 brake lights stuck on

there is a switch attached to the upper portion of the brake pedal, fittingly enough called the brake pedal switch. the plastic probably came from that. aside from contorting your body to get to the switch, it is relatively easy fix.

Can't shift out of park

sounds like your shift solenoid has failed

next to the gear shifter you will see a little plug

remove the plug and inset your key

this will allow you to shift into neutral

remove your key and start the car

2001 ford escort stuck in park lever won't move starts normally

If it wont move into gear, the safety switch is malfunctioning. You can take the plug out of the hole on the upper right side of the console just to the right of the gear shift lever. put a philips screwdriver in the hole and press down. this will manually release the gear shifter mechanism.
