Copies come out smugged

When I print the copies are coming out with smugging on several part of the page. Does the fuser need replacement? If so, is it worth replacing? How difficult is it to replace?

Re: Copies come out smugged

There are several things you want to check before you go replacing the fuser that usually just burns out and when it does all the panel lights flash at the same time. The problem you are describing is more likely excessive toner build-up check when the printer is off to see if there is a ridge of toner caked up where the paper enters the fuser assembly if so this can be scraped off carefully so as not to damage the fuser itself. Clean the transfer roller also or lastly clean the laser printhead itself it is able to be reached after removing the toner cartridge and using a DRY soft cloth to wipe back and forth along the fingerwide slit inside on the top of the printer. Also a defective/empty toner cartfidge could be to blame.

good luck

Why is my HP laser jet smugging the paper?

You may have a couple of bad cartridges, you may have a bad fuser unit. Were these oem or refurbished parts? Quality of refurbs can vary wildly. The heating elements on the 42xx series printers typically don't provide great performance when rebuilt.

Sounds like you are having a fusing pressure problem. I would call out a tech and get him to check out the Fixing unit area.

could be a number of problems that would require a technician, you may need to call one in but as a temporary solution, if you are copying/printing A4 the try A4R or from portrait to landscape. this may help temporarily.

If you're printing on photo paper, make sure you are printing on the correct side. Most photo paper has only one side to print on, the other side is a non-porous backing, and ink will sit on the surface until it dries (15 - 30 minutes, depending on temperature and humidity). And it won't look good even when it dries.

If you're printing on the correct side, try a different brand/type of photo paper.

Gestetner DSC 232SP: I purchased this copier used and it had printing ok. My color copies are coming out horrible. they are displaying a white line in the same area on page after page. Even after I ran a...

The white line or lines are NOT caused by the fuser. A defect "line" in the fuser would cause the symtom of the print rubbing off the page but not blank lines on your copy. First we need to separate your copy quality issues. This machine uses 4 drums, 4 developer units and a transfer belt. Most copy quality issues will reside in 1 or more of these units. Lets start with a few questions. 1)Are your copy quality issues ONLY on color copies? or are the black and whites poor too? 2) Are you running copies only thru the document feeder or have you made any copies from the glass?
Are you printing on the copier from your computer?

Print issues

Look at the fuser, and see if you can see a bad area on the fuser roller, matching the position on the paper. I suspect a bad fuser. Fusers need to be replaced periodically, and typically via a maint kit which replaces several feed rollers as well.. How many pages have been printed.. Print a config sheet to display this information.

Poor copies with OKI B4400

Possibly a fuser issue. Check by sending a 1 pg document to printer and opening cover when paper picked from tray but before it enters fuser. if image good then problem caused by fuser and you will need to replace. If image bad then possible defect with drum.

Dirty printing

The cause of this is a faulty toner cartridge. What happened was some toner spilled out of the cartridge and down into your printer. Take the toner cartridge out and with a damp paper towel just goto town and wipe everything down.

Replace the toner cartridge, and in about 20 pages it should clear up.
