Your dial-up relies on the internal modem to be working properly.
Check for your modem status using Device Manager.
If the listing for the modem has any yellow or red highlighting, then the modem software or hardware needs to be changed. If you leave your PC plugged into a phone line, internal modems are easily destroyed by lightning storms or surges in the phone line. If the Device Manager looks okay, then call your Internet Service Help Desk.
Plug your modem up to your phone line & plug in the power cord. If you are using an ethernet cable its should plug into the modem and into your computer. If you are connecting wirelessly, make sure you card has a wireless network card or that you have a wireless adapter. If it still doesn't work you may have to call you internet provider to make sure the modem settings correct.
1 Plug the Ethernet cable into the Internet port on your wall. If you do not have Internet ports installed in your home, connect a phone line adapter to a phone line jack. The adapter makes the phone line wider so Ethernet cables can connect to it. This does not block your phone from use.
2 Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into the Internet port on the back side of the Netgear DSL modem.
3 Connect the Netgear DSL modem to a local power source. The power plug inserts into the modem via a small port on the rear of the modem.
4 Insert a second Ethernet cable into one of the numbered ports on the back of the modem. Run the cable to your computer and plug it into the Ethernet port on the computer.
5 Look on the back end of the DSL modem for an HTTP: address. Type this into your Internet browser's search bar. The Netgear DSL modem menu appears on the screen.
6 Select how many computers are to use the modem, if you are using it with other DSL modems and set up a password (the default username and password is "admin"). Click "OK" to initiate the changes you made to the menu. You can now use your Netgear DSL modem to connect to the Internet.
When you move somewhere else you have to configure the laptop for that region's phone line.Go into control panel and into internet connections.Go to" set up an internet connection"This will take you through the set up procedure.THE IMPORTANT THING IT WILL ASK YOU IS YOUR REGIONAL CALLING CODEI.E. 0208 IS THE OUTER LONDON CODE.
Make sure that your computer is able to go online through the modem. If your computer is not able to go online through the modem then you will need to call ISP first. If your computer is able to go online through the modem then you need to connect the computer to the router and the modem to the router. open the set up page of the router and change the settings of the router according to the ISP.
If the Internet light is off then there is a problem with the phone line to the ADSL modem or the modem is faulty or there is a problem at the telephome exchange.
Disconnect the phone cable at the ADSL modem and connect a phone handset to this cable - check for a dial tone and that you can dial out.
If you don't get a dial tone, use a different or new phone cable.
If the phone line is OK then : -
Ring your ISP to get them to test your connection to your ADSL
You have two different devices here. A modem and a wireless network adapter. Two totally different devices. It sounds like the modem quit working but the wireless network adapter still functions. I'm assuming that the modem is built it. If you absolutely have to have it you could buy a PCMCIA modem if your laptop has a PCMCIA slot to plug it into. You could also have a corrupted modem driver.
cell phone as a modem is perhaps the most overlooked of all Internet
connection options. But a mobile phone Internet connection, whether as
a tethered modem or, using bluetooth, a wireless cell phone Internet
connection, is easy to set up, and with a laptop and cellphone you can
check email and surf the web from anywhere, any time, with the Internet
in your pocket!
Here are the basic instructions for creating a mobile phone Internet
connection. The instructions are for a cell phone with bluetooth (which
most cell phones these days have), but if your cell phone doesn’t have
bluetooth you can buy a cable to connect your laptop to your phone from
any cell phone accessory provider. Conversely, if your cell phone has
bluetooth but your laptop does not, you can buy a small USB device
which will enable bluetooth on your computer.
You just have to perform a hard reset on the modem to erase any previous data stored. Locate the small pinhole for the reset button on the bottom of the modem box if it is not at the back. Then you need to access modem gateway to put all configuration information on modem software by typing in 192.168.0.1 in your IE browser's GO TO website box (where you type website address/URL)
NOTE: Make sure that you know your username and password for your current internet connection configuration before RESETTING modem. If you don't have this settings, call your internet provider. =)
