Woes with Dell

Have got a dead Dell 8400 Dimension. Symptoms include permanent amber power light, air extractor fan that sounds like it is going to take off.
Spoke to a Dell engineer, he suggested power supply problem.
Changed power supply, still the same problem.
Any ideas?
Yours Bemused.

Hiya!! Same problem here with my 8400, 40 months old and well out of warranty. For the most part, she has run flawlessly, with the exception of a bad stick of RAM about 6 months ago. I replaced all (4) sticks of DDR2 512mb with (2) new 1gb sticks. All well until 6 days ago when I got home from work. I hit the power button and, well, you know, amber power button and a "rocket ship" for a fan. LoL. I couldn't power off via front button, so I had to pull the AC cord. Upon replacing the cord, unit "took-off" again w/o my pushing the power button. It was a combination of pulling the cord and pushing the button simultaneously before I could get the tower to stay off and be plugged in. When I attempted to start-up again, same rocket ship fan issue. I did get the thing to boot eventually by, again, some funky combination of pulling the AC cord and pushing the power button as well as some "jostling" of the tower. When it did finally start, I kept it running for (6) days while I removed data from it, saving music, pics etc. to an external drive. During the (6) day period it was on, I did re-start on (2) occasions, via Windows, not by turning off and on again. It re-started with no problem. Finally this morning, I turned it off and let it sit while I showered. Upon my return I attempted to turn on and you know it....amber light and rocket ship fan. Once again I was able to get it to boot with the funkyness of pulling, jostling, and punching the button. I have search online for similar issues and have found many with the same problem. It seems that all the others with the same problem have had 87 different ways to fix this. Does anyone have a sure-fire way to remedy this?? I've read PS, MoBo, CPU, RAM just to name a few. Any help is greatly appriciated!!

If the power light is steady amber, a device might be malfunctioning or incorrectly installed.

Disconect fan , see if it starts.

Dell dimension 8400 blinking amber light ethernet port

An Amber blinking power button indicates a low voltage problem. This can be caused by a defective power supply or a defective motherboard. Since you replaced the power supply, my guess is that the motherboard has a problem.
Just to make sure that nothing else is causing the problem, remove any PCI cards like modem, video card, sound card, etc... Remove the memory modules and disconnect cables to CD/DVD drives. Look at the USB ports to see if any are damaged.

Dell 8400 dead

Can you tell if your hard drive is running? You can here it or feel it spinning. Are the fans running? If no, I'm 99% sure you need to replace your power supply and/or motherboard. This kind of thing usually happens after a power surge.

My 6 year old Dell Dimension 8400 quit working completely.

Depending on the symptoms, you may have different faults.
http://www.fixya.com/support/r4282412-find_no_post_diagnostic_information_dell
Flashing Amber power LED, normally power supply
AAGG Diag LEDs normally bad RAM
Solid Amber Power LED, bad motherboard or Expansion card connected to it.
If you need a motherboard a Precision Workstation 370 motherboard is essentially the same and is available, (8400 motherboards are scarce)

The POWER and DIAG LEDs can give you information. If no DIAG LED look at the POWER LED

Flashing amber, most likely the power supply
Solid Amber, motherboard or item plugged into the motherboard (Expansion card, external connection etc.)

Dell Dimension 8400 power supply

Hi,
It not a common problem. The problem that you are facing is is beacuse of faulty motherboard. The blinking amber is caused , becasue the motherboard is not able to distribute the power signal to the devices . You can follow the link below to trouleshoot the problem if you are comfortable in opening the computer chassis

Have a yellow amber light blinking

A Blinking Amber or Yellow power button means that the power supply is receiving power from the source but is unable to properly distribute it to the components. This can be caused by a defective power supply or a defective motherboard. Just to make sure that nothing else is causing the problem, remove any PCI cards like modem, video card, sound card, etc... Remove the memory modules and disconnect cables to CD/DVD drives. Look at the USB ports to see if any are damaged.
