Dvd/cd rom not working

I am having trouble with my dvd drive in my acer aspire 3610 notebook computer. I can hold it up to my ear and hear something happening when I put a disk inside however the computer does not seem to recognize this anymore. It used to till a few month ago and I am completly baffled by it.

thanks for getting back, that really isn't the problem. It seems to not have any recognition. I can hear the unit trying to run. Do you think It is a software or a hardware problem.
    thanks

Acer aspire 3610 dvd drive does not work

Check it is "seen" in the bios first, a failed device will often disappear from the bios
Then, in My Computer, see if you can see the DVD Icon
Now If you can see it, go to Control panel, device manager and see if there is a yellow exclaimation mark next to the device, indicating a problem. If there is, the device has possibly failed, but you can try to remove the retaining screw that holds it into the laptop remove the DVD and re-insert it. This works most times IF the device still has life left in it

IF you cannot see the DVD in My Computer, repost and I'll talk you through the next stage, which involves resetting the filters in the registry

When i put in a disc the drive light is lit up and you can hear it spin and then nothing. Won't autoplay and doesn't reconized the cd drive as even being attached anymore. How can I fix this or do I need to...

If you open My Computer, and there is no icon for the CD/DVD drive, then your computer has a "hardware" problem. Take it to a qualified technician for trouble-shooting, and possibly for disassembly/replacement of the drive/reassembly.

Your LCD display could have gone bad. Try hooking up an external monitor to the laptop. If the external monitor works, then your LCD is bad. If that's the case it may be more cost effective to purchase a new laptop. Prior to doing so, I would check with Acer to find out how much they will charge you to replace the LCD. Good Luck!

Acer 3610 - DVD-ROM Drive

If it doesn't work at all, go to My computer, right click>properties>device manager>hardware, then at the top you will see an icon that says(when you put the mouse over it) scan for new hardware. See it this shows the drive. You can also press F2 or DEL on boot up and highlight 'Standard CMOS Settings' and see if your drive is seen by the bios. You may have an option to press a key to detect all drives, or press enter on the 'secondary' line and see if it is recognised. If all this fails it may be that either the power connection to your drive has become detatched or the drive itself is faulty. Please rate this solution.
