Question about Jura Capresso Impressa S9 Coffee Maker/Espresso Machine

EMPTY GROUNDS warning will not reset

I have an IMPRESSA S9 Avantgarde machine and have used it without problems for just over a year. Recently I have been having trouble with the machine after I empty the coffee grounds. The "EMPTY GROUNDS" warning will remain on after I clean the tray and replace it in the machine. The only way to reset the EMPTY GROUNDS warning is to leave the tray out of the machine up to 10 minutes. Please help with a reason for this and a solution. Thank you.

I have the same chronic problem with an S7 Avantgarde machine. I have tried scrubbing the tray & contacts clean (at the advice of the Capresso phone line support) and completely cleaned the area inside the machine around the tray of any stray grounds. The result is completely intermittant and almost every time I have to empty the grounds tray results in at least 5-10 minutes of figgling to get the 'empty grounds' message to go away.

Personally I don't know if I buy the message from the customer support line that the tray contacts are what senses when the spent grounds cup needs emptying. Those contacts are clearly linked to the side of the tray where excess water and coffee drippings are collected and seem to be meant for sensing when the tray is full of water, not spent grounds. However, I cannot find another sensor and the support line has been useless in offering any other suggestions than 'rinse the tray thoroughly' or 'clean the contacts on the tray'

If anyone has found a permanent solution to this problem, please post. Thanks!

I have the same problem. It started with the 'tray missing' warning and then evolved to the 'empy grounds' message. Waiting seems to help as I can't find another sensor anywhere either.

I have the same problem with an Impressa Z 5, but we have to leave the tray out overnight. I have cleand the tray contacts at the back but this is not the problem. The problem seems to be internal.

same problem here - "Empty Grounds" will not reset. The only "fix" I have found is empty tray when system is on. turn off system by either unplugging or back power switch. power back on. system displays, "tray missing" - push tray back in. should reset. (kind of silly to have this common problem on a machine of this cost)

The solution was referenced in one of the earlier postings but I wanted to clarify in case people are misunderstanding. The two metal contacts at the back of the machine insert into the wall of the machine and tell the coffee maker that the tray is inserted. Sometimes the big, flat, readily visible portion of these contacts get dirty and I think people are focusing on this portion of the contacts. However, the metal contacts also bend down into the tray where they can detect water (basically if there is enough water or material to conduct between the two contacts then the machine tells you to empty the try). This is the portion where you need to focus on cleaning, down in the tray, between the narrow plastic valley at the back of the tray. It will require Q-tips or something to really push down into the tray to clean away from the contacts. I did not have water in the tray but had enough moist old coffee grounds that it was causing the issue. I cleaned this area with water, a toothbrush and Q-tips and ensured it was very clean and dry. I have not seen the issue again in months (my coffee maker is three years old, gets used daily and we keep it relatively clean, but this is the first time we've gotten this error).

The tray metal contacts are just for water level in drip tray.
You need to ensure the rubber gate on the grounds tray is inserted correctly.
Also you need to look inside the machine where tray goes and ensure the waste outlet is clean as it can build up with grounds.

Just want to add another kudos for those who pointed out the importance of cleaning the area where the metal contacts bend down into the tray. I spent half an hour cleaning/buffing/drying/sanding the contact tips on the tray as well as the female receptacle inside the machine before stumbling onto that suggestion.

The area between the contacts on the tray, where they bend at a 90 degree on the back of the tray, was not even visibly dirty or scummy, but nonetheless I scrubbed it with a toothbrush, steel wool, and a lot of hot water and the problem was fixed.

S9 Owner for years, had every problem conceivable, returned many times for service. Contact cleaning, tray cleaning, area around and under tray cleaning inside all work, but the problem will always grow gradually worse. The empty grounds problem was finally resolved to be in the chute to the upper left where the used grounds come down and out. The access is difficult, you have to tilt on 45 deg and use a flashlight. With a tool or finger and napkin you have to get up in there and get the built-up grounds out! Those grounds collect over time, get caked and dried. You have got to go in and get it all cleared out. Or, return for service and they will do the cleaning for you. Good machine, a real firend, but it is complex and becomes grumpy.

I have been having this same problem for a while. it has progressively got worse and harder to clear. I had spoken with Cappresso numerous times and I was about to give up and send my machine in for repair.
Looking at the contacts on the tray, I noticed that they bend down into the tray along a very narrow trough. They were very dirty at that point. I used a old toothbrush with soap and scrubbed the contacts and the trough clean. My problem was eliminated.

We have the same problem. Several times we've taken a cotton swab to clean up inside the machine where the grounds come out. This helped a few times, but not all. The waiting may work, and we will try that out. Any ideas on how to prevent this (i.e. cleaning or servicing would really help.)

I called Capresso and they suggest running cold water over the two contact prongs at the back of the machine for 20 seconds, then replacing. This works about 75% of the time... but is irritating. I also cleaned the contacts but this didn't have any effect.

Ours did the same, I think it was a build up of damp grinds on the contacts in the back of the tray cavity

My Jura Impressa S9 does not GRIND?

Could be bad grinder or no 12v. The display/control runs on 5v and there is a transformer (supplying 5/12vdc) where the a/c cord comes in. Mine was blown from lightening.
Try these guys... they have parts, trouble shooting and videos on youtube.

Jura impressa s9 is displaying error 1

The Owner Manual for the Jura Impressa S9 One Touch identifies Error 2 as being too cold and disabled for safety, but simply instructs to "Turn the IMPRESSA off at the power switch. Contact Customer Support in your country." for all other errors.

I just went thru the entire decalcifying process and got to the final step, emptied the drip tray and coffee grounds bin, put the tray back into place, but can't get the display off of "empty...

You should Clean and dry the metal contacts on the back of the drip tray, ensuring that the gap between the contacts is clean and dry (if present, contacts not on all JURA models) Make sure that the plastic in between the contacts is clean

Have an Impressa S Avantgarde Series that will not fill with water. The unit has not been used for about a year

The Operating Instructions for your machine can be found here:

http://www.capresso.com/pdf/inst_s9a.pdf

Are you getting any Error Messages? Refer to the Troubleshooting Error Messages on page 30.

Is the low water flotation device in place and working?

Suggest you walk through the instructions for Preparing the Machine for the First Time on page 11.

Pay special attention to the water filter cartridge as I suspect this will need replacing, page 18 & 19.

You may also need to run a decalcification cycle, page 28, to make sure deposits have not plugged the machine.

There is a Quick Reference Guide available for your machine which you may also find helfpul:

Seems Problem with the bean sensor. you need to get the same replaced. there are no setting that can be done manually for bean sensor.

A Jura Engineer can check the Bean sensor with his computer system and confirm if the bean sensor is faulty.

Fill beans message keeps coming up on jura capresso impressa s9

You need to open the grinder, it`s probably packed with old fine powdered coffee that blocks the outlet. Clean this out and try again. Since it works normal when you use pre-ground coffee, there shouldn`t be any problems with any other parts.

Let me know if you want a description for have to open and clean the grinder.

Good luck!
