Power button failure

Unable to turn my nuvi 350 on or off using the power button.
Is this because the battery charge is too low to operate the on/off ? Please help!

Just out of warranty (bough last fall). Same problem--it does power up with the car charger, but not helpful when I program in all my sales calls the night before to prevent typing while driving. Garmin reports $175 to fix--and I can buy a brand new one for just over that.

Exact same problem - power button no longer works. Unit can be turned on by powering with car adapter or AC charger; it will turn off automatically when the car adapter is removed/turned off, or you can press the reset button (behind the flip-up antenna).

Power button failure... Unit was not dropped, the power button does not work. I can turn the power on by plugging the unit into the car adaptor, but no other way.

I have the Garmin 350 over a year and it's very hard to turn on/off with the power switch. If this is a design fault, can we do something about it ?

  • Anonymous Aug 02, 2008

Same problem. Started after about 3 years of use.

The power button is inoperative--I need to plug it in the car adapter. There is no history of damage

  • Anonymous Feb 07, 2009

I had the same problem with mine. I opened it (find how to open it on the web) and found out that the connectors were loose.

garmin nuvi 200, the power button doesn't do anything, it will only turn on/off when plugged in or unplugged.

There is a well known issue with power switch failures on this unit. It happened to me as well. I have heard that you can power the unit on with the car charger or if you plug it into the PC using the USB interface. I will try this tonight and report back my finding. I will be taking mine apart because of my bad experience using Garmin's technical support line. Most likely the problem is a defective switch or broken solder joint where the switch connects to the motherboard. Remember also, you have to hold the switch down for a couple seconds for the unit to power up.

I have confirmed that the unit WILL power on when plugged into the car adapter and PC USB connector. The only way to turn it off is either let it turn itself off when the power plug is removed or press the reset button. The switch is bad and needs replaced. I'll try to post how to take the unit apart, step-by-step and discuss how to replace the switch.

This is a common problem with the Nuvi series. It's a design flaw. The on/off switch is a surface mount switch that is mounted vertically off of the main PC board.

The problem is, that there is no support behind the switch, so when you press down the button, the solder leads of the switch are stressed and eventually break off the main PC board. This is a design flaw and could have been easily prevented by wedging a small piece of plastic between the rear of the switch and the SD card housing to give the switch support.

Also, the solder pads for the mechanical connections of the switch could have been made bigger, allowing for more surface area and more solder application.

I have repaired many of these before.

If you would like for me to repair your GPS for a very reasonable price, please email me at KS3R at sharc dot net. I repair the unit and reinforce the switch so it won't happen again.

Note to all Garmin Nuvi 350 Users with a Defective On/Off Switch:

    1. In order to repair this problem, you need to have surface mount desoldering/soldering skills as well as the appropriate soldering tools and case dissassembly tools. Without these things, you take the risk of further damaging your Nuvi, possibly making it impossible to repair.

    2. Resoldering the switch is not going to resolve the issue long-term. In some cases, the switch can not be resoldered and additional rework must be performed. In some cases, the switch is defective and needs to be replaced. It is a surface mount part.

    3. In order to fix this problem once and for all, the switch needs to be mechanically secured better to the main PCB using pre-tinned buswire. In addition, a custom-fit piece of plastic needs to be glued behind the switch to give it additional support.

For a reasonable price, I will repair youf Nuvi on/off switch and put in the modications so it doesn't happen again. Repair takes 1 day, units are sent back the next day. Please contact me at KS3R at sharc dot net if interested. I have references.

The switch assembly has rotated away from the circuit board losing the tongue and groove contact with the plastic slider. This may have been caused by the unit exposed to impact. It is not recommended that you open the case due to the fact you may rip the wiring harness which connects the LCD to the circuit board. You require a special tool to insert simultaneously into the slots on the bottom of the unit. The case must be popped open with equal pressure exerted by the tool at the two slots. The case must be prevented from popping off a distance longer than the wiring harness. Otherwise, the harness will tear away from the circuit board rendering the unit unrepairable.

I am having the exact same issue with my Garmin 655t. I use it for search and rescue work, so this is an inexcusable issue for a very expensive device.

I cannot use the GPS unit while in charge mode(NUVI 350)

Are you using a USB cable & charger to operate the GPS?

If so, you should stop and use the supplied cradle / power cord to power the GPS instead. The USB cable is used to transfer data to and from the GPS and on other models (maybe your 350, too) to slow charge the GPS battery when completely discharged. Powering with the USB cable will power up the GPS, but does not allow navigation, mapping, etc.

Press the Power button on the top right corner of the case.
If unit will not power on, battery may be dead. Try connecting car charger or power adapter to unit.
To charge battery faster, leave unit connected to power adapter or car cord. Press and hold Power button to turn unit off. Screen will show "Going into charge mode."

Nuvi 350 wont charge with car adaptor. But charges with ac charger in usb port of Nuvi. Any thoughts? I have another Nuvi 350 that does charge with this ones car adaptor.

Are you using the same port on the Nuvi to connect the car adapter and the ac charger, or two different ones? If not, then the jack could be broken (solder joint, pin?).

Garamin Nuvi 350...blanked out and won't turn back on.

Try the computer USB adapter. After it's been connected for about 20 seconds then try powering on the Nuvi. Even if your unit's battery is dead the USB connection should hold power on the unit so that the computer recognizes it as a Mass Storage Device (Windows). If that doesn't work then use the wall adapter and leave it plugged in for an hour or so. At that point if the unit fails to power on then push the reset button in the back under the antena and hold it in for 10 seconds while the cord is connected to the wall. This will clear any software related issues that would stop it from powering up - any other result indicates most likely a hardware failure. At least rule out your plugs.

Gqrmin 350 GPS Receiver wont turn on

Dead Battery? That makes no sense at all. He mentioned he was running it off the battery - " I was able to plug it in to a computer1.gif and unplug and was able to use it on the battery. Once I unplug and use it on battery, the only way I can power it off is by pressing the Reset button on the back."

The fact of the matter is that there is a well known issue with Nuvi 350 Power switch. I haven't taken mine apart yet (also bad power switch), but most likely the switch is defective or the solder joints are broken.
