You may try the following:

1) Plug the wireless card on another slot
2) Update the drivers of the wireless card

If those does not work, you may try to install the wireless card on another computer just to isolate if the problem is on the wireless card or on the slot of the computer

Wireless without a cable

Some T40 series (especially T42) laptops have built-in wireless cards and you only need to install the wireless driver.
If you don't have a built in wireless card you can purch a PCMCIA wireless card and inset it into the PCMCIA slot on the laptop.
These cards are common and are available from several manufactories such as Netgear and DLink.

IBM Lapyop T42-message"Fan errors" does not turn on

your cooling fan is reporting as damaged you need to replace the fan unit (cooling pad as well) likely service is required and unless you want to disassemble your laptop a service center would be better suited for this job.

Where is the wireless switch on the IBM think pad?

Use Fn + F5 (most thinkpads) to enable your wireless.
If you are used to a menu, visit www.lenovo.com (the producer of IBM Thinkpads for ages) and download System Update (a program which will download a lot of updates and drivers for your Thinkpad)

Wireless not recognized after reinstalling windows xp

You'll need to get to another computer that has access to the internet. Then, go to this web site: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?template=%2Fproductselection%2Flandingpages%2FbrowseByProductLandingPage.vm&sitestyle=lenovo&brandind=10&validate=true
It's the driver and download page for the ThinkPad T43. enter the correct information for the exact model you have and you should be able to find the correct driver. A general page of wireless drivers for the ThinkPad can also be found here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-58597#wireless
