I have a usb mouse with my laptop and it used to work nicely with the touchpad. Now the touchpad does not respond to tapping but still moves the arrow. I have only superficial knowledge of computers and do not know what steps to take to correct this fault. Your help would be appreciated.

Is there a small button near or on the touchpad, most laptops have a small button that enables and disables the touchpad just by pressing it.

Cursor problem

Disabling the touchpad on a Dell Inspiron can be useful when typing for long periods of time, or using an external mouse. Bumping or tapping the touchpad while typing can cause cursor jumping and unwanted results. Use the touchpad software to enable or disable touchpad controls. Download the driver for your touchpad at the Dell Support website.

Click on the "Touchpad" icon in the task bar. If the icon doesn't appear, you can download and install the driver for the touchpad from the Dell website, or choose "Start" and "Control Panel." Choose "Device Select" on the touchpad menu, or choose "Mouse" in the "Control Panel" menu and "Device Select." Click "Disable" under "Touchpad" to turn off the touchpad, or click "Disable Touchpad/Pointing Stick When a USB Mouse is Connected."

How do you turn off the touch pad

Some notebook users find the touch pad annoying because at times, while typing fast, their thumbs accidentally brush up against the touchpad. This is frustrating because the mouse cursor jumps to a random location on the screen and can cause undesirable things.

To turn off the touchpad when an external mouse or other pointing device is present, you can goto the Control Panel and double click the Mouse properties icon.

Click the Device Select tab and check "Disable Touch Pad when USB Pointing Device is present." The cursor will no longer move via the touchpad.

My Dell N4010 Laptop with Windows 7 software indicated a message of "touchpad disabled", and I can not manipulate the mouse.

You are confused. Your touch pad is disabled, but if you plug a mouse into the USB port, your PC will find it and install its software and you will be able to use the mouse To re-enable the touch pad, click on the Windows ball at lower left of desktop, Control Panel, Mouse, Touch Pad, Enable Touch Pad.

Can you please tellme how to disable the touchpad so may use a mouse?

I am sorry, it seems you've closed the chat window, and I have no other way to contact you and get back to you. Anyway I wish you good luck.
Here's the steps again..

Click "Start" go to "Control Panel" and open "Mouse Properties" then "TouchPad" and disable it.. There must be several options to disable or enable, the best is to select "Disable Touch Pad when USB Pointing device is present" so that it'll not be necessary to manually re-enable it from the Control panel..

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

THe mouse on my lap top is locked .how can i unlock it

The TouchPad is enabled by default. To change the enable/
disable TouchPad setting by using the Fn + F9 keys, see
“Disabling or enabling the TouchPad” on page 234.
You may also change the enable/disable setting as follows:
1 Click Start, Control Panel.
The Control Panel window appears.
2 Click Printers and Other Hardware.
3 Click Mouse.
The Mouse Properties window appears.
4 Click the TouchPAD ON/OFF tab.
The TouchPAD ON/OFF tab view window appears.
5 Select Disable or Enable, whichever is appropriate.
6 Click Apply.
7 Click OK.
The Mouse Properties window closes.
8 Close the Printers and Other Hardware window.
9 Close the Control Panel window.

Or you can get the manual on the link below. Just type in the # code and click on download now. Page 61 tells you how to unlock the mouse pad.
