WD MyBook 320 GB Premium - Retrieving Data

Should give up trying to resolve the issue of why my external hard drive needs reformatting months after I loaded it with thousands of important files and data....

I am using a Desktop PC via Firewire, one day I turned it on only for it to Not read/recognize my drive as formatted.

Is there any software available for this kind of problem?

Question: can i and how do i open the chasis and install it in another external hard drive case (is this even the problem?)

Re: WD MyBook 320 GB Premium - Retrieving Data

You should buy a program called "Partition Table Doctor". I went through the EXACT same thing and it was just a bad partition on my mybook which is the EXACT same as yours is. It cleared up the problem for me. I still have problems with my mybook so i wish that I bought a different hard drive, but oh well.

but try "Partition Table Doctor", it will scan your mybook and fix any partition errors with it.

I was in the same boat as you over a year ago and trust me, "Partition Table Doctor" is a LIFESAVER!

If i reformat my external dont i lose my already saved data

formatting wipes a drive clean. so if you format your external then all data on it will be lost. I assume this is what you mean.

WD 1TB MyBook suddenly needs reformatting?

most likely cause of this is that the partition tables are'll need to run a checkdisk on the drive..
go to command prompt
change to drive letter of the drive you want to scan
type in
chkdsk /p

you should get a message about windows finding some faults and repairing them....once done you should be able to access the data on the drive

You could try recycling to see if they give you anything for scrap. I'm sorry to say that it would be worth nothing any other way.

221 GB Free on MyBook - Error states not enough space for backup

It may be due to the file system.  If formated as FAT32 files larger than 4gb may not transfer.  Try reformatting as NTFS to fix the problem.

Cannot communicate with my book

Try a replacement USB cable first, and test the MyBook on a different computer, to ensure the fault is on the external storage unit.

There are two possibilities:

The Mybook USB/ATA controller board is faulty.
In this case you can simply take apart the enclosure and mount the disk into a new enclosure. WD Mybooks are SATA, but double check the hard disk connector to ensure.

The hard disk inside is faulty.
In this case repair may be expensive. You need to locate a data recovery facility with a 'clean room' , the cost is usually more than $800.

If this happened after a power surge, then the problem is most likely a faulty controller board.

If instead you have dropped the hard disk it is possible an hard drive failure, in that case repair will be expensive.

A replacement enclosure will stfrom art about $20 on Ebay or Amazon, and must not necessarily be WD .
Check if your disk is Sata or PATA (IDE) before buying the enclosure.
