I was told my the squealing on my 87 cadillac fleetwood brougham could be alternator/ a/c compressor.the squealing comes when i turn on the heat is safe to say that it might be the a/c compressor since that is connected to the heating control buttons? thanks in advance.

Ahh 87. Nice car.. Well since you have an Electric issue, I can't tell you how to check for shorts and other items BUT you can get a Vacuum tee and tie into a working Vacuum line and add a small 1/4 inch vacuum line to the Heater control valve on the passenger side engine heater hose and that will start sending the hot water/coolant into the heater core, I hope your blower works you would have heat, I really never like that auto Climate systems.. But that will give you some heat and give you more time to get the dash to work.. BCB...
For the 1989 Cadillac Fleetwood: I do not know if you have the Fleetwood Brougham with the 5.0L V8, or the Fleetwood FWD (Front Wheel Drive) with the 4.5L V8; however I have included both below.
check the alternator fuse that can be a fuse link by the battery pole,check alternator voltage on the alternator red wire or connector,it should the same as on the battery ,check ground wires for loose intermitent contact
