DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter are two programs that can be used to backup DVDs.
DVD Shrink reduces dual-layer DVDs in size so that they fit on single, blank DVD media.
DVD Decrypter is used to burn that file to disc after the video has been authored in DVD Shrink.
Open DVD Shrink, click "Full Disc" on the toolbar, then insert your DVD into the disc drive.
Click "Open Disc," then select the DVD drive, and click "OK."
Click "Main Movie," then remove any "Audio" or "Subpicture" (subtitle) streams that you don't need by disabling the tick boxes.

Click the "Extras," and decide if you want to remove any.
If you do, set the "Video" drop-down menu to "Still Image."
Click "Backup" then select "Create an ISO image" from the "Select backup target" drop-down menu.
Select "Browse" and then choose a temporary location for your ISO image to be stored.
Click "Quality Settings," and make sure "Compress video with high..." is selected.
Click "OK." Close DVD Shrink when the ISO image has been created.
Open DVD Decrypter, click "Mode," then "ISO," then "Write W."
Click the folder icon and locate the ISO created with DVD Shrink. Insert a blank DVD, and then click the burn button in the bottom-left.
You will now have backed up your home movie DVD.

Using Roxio Video Wave 2011 on HP laptop windows 7 (3 months old)
I created a new Production using pics and mpeg2 files from sons baseball team.
This production is 45 minutes.
Now I would like to create a dvd for kids and parents.
I selected Output > Send to MyDVD
I selected Standard Definition DVD.
Another windows appeared called Roxio MyDVD.
I created a basic layer and no sub menus.
I selected Preview Project and it plays wonderfully.
Then I selected Burn Project button.
Burn Project window appeared.
I place a Sony DVD+R into the drive.
I selected 8X speed.
I select Burn to disc and save disc image file (.iso)

When Encode movie and menu process is over, the DVD is blank.

The pc won't burn cd's seems like it doesn't recognize cds or dvds

Does the cd/dvd drive read cds? This is a good test to ensure that the drive is functional.

Sometimes, generic cd/dvd burners do not recognize certain types of blank discs. Try another type of
brand blank discs, it should work.

DVD writer doesn't recognise blank dvd or playback

try using a lens cleaning disk if that does not restore it then you need a replacement other possible solutions are to check the cables in the back of the drive ensure they havent come loose

Drive does read audio cd but not dvd.writer also can't burn any.

If you have Roxio or Sonic installed, sometimes the configuration will get corrupt.

Uninstall all application software that relates to any CD/DVD burning, and try the following:

Download the following FREE is the best burning software I have ever used and it is FREE!
ALWAYS set the burn speed very LOW....4X for CD's and 2X for DVDS and you will never go back to the other burners again!
The BEST options for using InfraRecorder is to burn data discs, burn Disc images and to create Disc images.
I trashed Roxio and Sonic because they are too memory dependent and they contradict each other's configuration...

Cannot backup files to a cd/dvd

we may need more details but you can try this for now

1. are you sure you have a cd writer or a dvd writer (writer = burner)--- check the front edge of your cd/dvd unit and look for words like "writer" "burner" or writeable next to the word dvd or compact disc... keep in mind not all cd/dvd writer can write (burn) cd or dvds, some may burn cd but not dvds.

2. is your cd/dvd unit compatible with the media (cd or dvd blank disk) you are trying to use.. depending your cd/dvd especifications your dvd/cd drive is compatible with certain types of cd or dvds that are writeable.

3. is the cd/dvd a writeable cd/dvd and is compatible with your cd/dvd drive? for instance.. if you are using a blank dvd and your cd/dvd drive only burn cd/s and read dvd and cd you won't be able to write to the blank dvd.

4. are you trying to burn a dvd in a corporate computer.?? as a user (not an administrator) of your corporate computer you may not have priviledges that will allow them to burn dvd/cd's even you your drive and your media are compatible.

please post
the error that you get
the brand and model of the computer you're using
the type of media you're using

My dvd driive in my computer won't play dvds

Do you mean DVD movies wont play? If so you need to install DVD software. Use Google to search for some or buy some e.g. PowerDVD.

DVD burning problem

if you have tried different dvd-r and dvd-rw discs, unfortunately it's a sign that your writer is failing to read the discs correctly, this normally happens when the writer is about to give up, although it may still write and read cd's but not dvd's
