Question about Toshiba 42H83 42" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

1 Answer

Please help I took a look inside my 42H83 to find the hyper module, but I couldn't locate the board. Does anyone have a detailed description of where this board is located and/or a picture of the board? Many Thanks!

Did you find out which board it was?

Thanks for the response. I took off the plastic bracket per your instructions and found a board incased with a metal frame. Is this the board?

If so, I can't seem to remove the board. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Its located behind the video input board. it runs parallel with it and has a plastic bracket over it. Upi wont be able to see it unless you remove the plastic bracket

42H83 is a Toshiba first made in 2003.

What is wrong (98% chance) is the HYPER BOARD in this set is now failing----all signal from all inputs is processed thru this board.

Considering the board is now only available on a rebuild basis----and the cost for this is well over 200 dollars not counting labor to remove--replace--set, unless you know someone who is VERY GOOD AT SOLDERING-----not worth repairing.

What happens here is this board has close to 20 surface mounted filter caps---with time and heat they dry out---usually the time before the problem clears up will get longer and longer---leaking caps may start to function to some degree after they get hot--hence the time from dead cold until the set works.

Most caps have 2 leads and are soldered through the circuit board----these are very small caps with tabs on them----and are soldered to the top of the board.

I am sorry to give you not so good news--but based on your description---I am sure it is your problem.

Call around your area telling them model number and you suspect it is a bad HYPER board---if a shop can actually fix it(replace the caps) parts cost would be under 30 dollars---

Any authorized Toshiba repair shop can go online and see the service bulletin for this--they have a large color picture of the board and indicate which caps have to be replaced.

If this information helped you, rate this solution as I do this here for free.

No Video

The VVPU14 hyper module in that unit is a trickey installation because they have their can tabs soldered to the motherboard and next to each of the solder points on the pad are fine wire traces on top and bottom of the board that can easily be broken or over soldered... Check there first, with a fine magnifier. To answer your question, no, there are no resets or anything else you need to do to after the H/M install. Good Luck. Bill

The picture is all waves ,I get sound and color but the picture is all lines and waves, what part should I get??

To fix the shaky picture on the toshiba rear projection tv model number 42h83. You need to either replace the 13 capictors on the hyper module or simply replace the hyper module itself. It's cheaper to replace the caps, but you'll need decent soldering skills to do this. You can replace the entire hyper module with less soldering skills, but I believe the module costs about $100, maybe alittle more. You can find the entire fix by googleing "hyper module". Good luck and I hope this helps

from your decription i would guess that you have a bad hyper module ideally you need to replace this but their hard to find. so toshiba has issued repair instructions for repair of this board which involves replacement of very small micro capacitors. our shop ussally charges around 200 for this repair. this is not a easy repair you need experience tech to solder becuse you can easly damage this nonreplaceable board

Removing the hyper board

I ordered a Next HYPER Board, PD0264A (as seen in the service manual). I ordered it from Vance Baldwin Electronics ( The only part available is a substitute, PN 23148017 MODULE, SCAN CONVERTER. The cost was 219.50. It was backordered so it did not arrive for almost 3 months. Install is a little tricky. It is accessed from the back. You need to remove the input board, the video processor, and some brackets to get to the Hyper board. The hard part is putting the TV on either its front or back (much eaiser if its laying on the screen, although more dangerous) and then desoldering for tabs that go through the signal board. There is a lot of solder on these and two of them have been twisted for some pain in the **** reason. They are difficult to twist back without damaging anything. When it is desoldered and twisted back, the board should come out. Be careful not to crack the signal board when pulling this out as I did. See above for what it does. I found a slight chip in my signal board and it took some difficult board repair to get the runs connected again (please be careful, as the repair is difficult and not nearly as relaible as an unbroken board.

Anyways, install your new board, put everything back, and power it on. I'm sure you'll have to do a convergance and some other adjustments, but if your doing this fix, a convergence should be cake. My problem has been fixed and I'm thrilled to not have to trash my TV.

There are about 6 or 7 surface mount capacitors 10mf/16v that cause the symptom you are having. They are located under the shield of the hyper module. The hyper module is located behind the input jack panel in the back. The module is vertically mounted and can be removed from its socket. However you must first unsolder the 4 anchor tabs of the shield first. Thats the easy part. Removal and replacement of the capacitors requires precise and excellent soldering skills. This job should be left to someone who has done this a few times. Hope this info helps.
