We bought a used Philips 42" flatscreen digital TV with no remove and hooked it up to our cable box. It works beautifully but we have not able to reset the screen size using the side buttons and menu...

Yes there is a trick. Usually the cable box and its remote determines the picture's screen size. First off, this television is able to display hd on an hd cable box. Make sure that this cable box is connected with this television the hd way only. It should only be connected to your television with either a component (green, blue, red, white, red) cable OR and hdmi cable. The coax cable should not be used to connect the cable box to the television if you have an hd cable box. Next make sure the television is on the proper input/source to display the cable box in hd.

Now if all of this has already been done, look for the hd zoom # button on your cable remote. It is usually towards the bottom. When you press it you change the screen size. You can buy a philips remote-the original one for your television at if you need the wide/stretch/zoom/viewmode button to further adjust your picture size.

My sanyo hdtv plasma won't show the whole picture but it worked fine yesterday

Hi my name is Roety,
I can help you with your issue ,
There are a few buttons to adjust the picture size on different make TVs and even on the Cable/Satellite remotes .
First look on the TV remote, set it to Full ,Fill or Just or 16 x 9 (whichever your model uses) Samsung uses the P size button ,
Then on the cable/dish Box remote stretch (not zoom) is usually best.
On the box remote set the output resolution to 1080i only
And use 16x9 when if offers a choice.
Cable remotes use the # key as a zoom/size button.
Due to the fact there are 16 size/Formats available (3 or 4 being transmitted now). you may have to hit the zoom/stretch button on some HD channels.
But with these settings the picture will mostly stay full and help you avoid image burn from the edges being not on the edge.
Stretch will fill the screen and allow you to read the bottom.
Make sure you are on the correct input, sometimes TVs are connected on multiple inputs
(not necessary, only the HD input is needed)
If I have helped you with your issue
If you have more questions you can still respond
I will reply asap

Can you tell me which Cable box you are using?Which model/region?

The possibility is that the HDCP handshake could not have happend correctly and hence the issue. Try to connect to different HDMI input of TV from Cable box. If possible change the resolution of cable box and check video

Picture size exceeds TV screen

If you are also using a Cable Box, make sure that the zoom selection, (Format) ,on the Cable Box remote is set properly. Especially if the TV Remotes Aspect Ratio is set to a Wide Format.
Hope this helps,

Aspect ratio problems on Samsung LN-S2651D Flat Panel TV

The aspect ratio (zoom) button on the cable remote had been changed. On Brighthouse the # button toggles through the zoom settings. It's not a tv issue, it's a cable fix.

Cannot view the full picture

First, you have to tell me how the cable box is connected to the TV, by HDMI or component. If it is connected by HDMI, the cable box settings will override the picture size settings on the TV. It may be as simple as resetting the picture size on the cable box, but I am not familiar with the type of cable boxes that Comcast uses.

Normal Picture Mode Not Available With Cox HD-DVR (Motorola DCH3416) and HDMI Cable

With an HDMI cable connected, the cable box determines the picture size. The settings on the cable box must be changed in order for you to get the correct picture size. I have some experience with Motorola cable boxes; usually to access the settings you turn the box OFF and then press the menu or settings button on the box to bring up the display menu. Hope this helps!

The picture has shrunk - maybe 720P vs 480P?

make sure your hd cable connection from your cable box is going to an hd connection to your tv.[via hdmi, dvi,or componant.] if you have a different hook up such as rca out or coax out, these are not hd connections and you are probably streching out the picture.look at the rear of the tv & cable box and see how the connections are.the hd hook up to the hd input should make the picture the right size only if it's set on the hd input channel.hook up the dvd player to a aux/line in or video/source input and try changing the picture size. you may have to play around with it till you get it the way you want.
hope this helps.

Cannot fill screen with normal picture size setting

assuming you all have comcast and using an hdmi cable
first access menu (hit it twice) and go to set picture format, choose passthrough....or in your case auto hdmi

then turn box off, press guide and info on the front of the box, proceed through the setup, advanced is more in

select 1080, 720, and then either the standard or widescreen 480s to your liking.....

now check your tv settings to accommodate
