Question about Compaq Presario 5000 PC Desktop

Can't get an internet connection

I have a Compaq Presario 5000 all of a sudden it will not connect to the internet.  I use a cable modem and the cable company verified my connection is good. Could it be the ethernet card? If so, do you have any idea how much it is to replace? Do you think it would help to reinstall my XP Home software?

    Wow - thanks to all of you...I am really surprised by your quick responses.  I was able to get connected to the internet using a USB cable so it looks like the ethernet card is the culprit.

    You do not need to reinstall XP.

    Try these tips:



    Check modem lights, are they all on?

    Look at the internet card. are the lights blinking?

    Sometimes Viruses will disconect you. run the virusscanner, spybot and adaware in SAFE MODE.

    Go to device manager and check network adapter. Make sure it looks good there.

    There are a number of possible causes for this. I can assist you, but more information is needed. First, check the status of your network connection by clicking on Start -- Control Panel -- Network Connections. Now right-click on "Local Area Connection" and click on "Status" in the menu that pops up. Does the status say "Connected"??

    What happens when you try to connect to the Internet? Do you get an error message?

    Another item to check is the network link light on the back of your computer and also on the cable modem. When the network cable is properly plugged in, there is typically a green light that tells you it's working.

Try resetting your modem by unplugging it for 30 seconds and then plugging it back in. If you have a router do the same for that. Restart your computer while you're doing this.

Another thing, open your network connections from the control panel. Click view network connections. Find your connection, it should say Local area connection. Right click it and select repair.

How or what do i need to connect internet i have router (2wire) from AT&T for wireless laptop but now i bought a desktop an compaq presario 5000 with windows 98


You need a Wireless adapter for the Compaq desktop. But with Win98, it will be almost impossible to find one that will work in your Compaq. Everything out there requires at least WIN XP.

Best thing to do is to use an Cat5 Ethernet cable and connect the Desktop to the 2Wire.

Is your cable modem also a wireless router?

From my search on it, it is not a wireless router.

This means you need to attach a hub or a wireless router to your cable modem so that more than one computer can connect to the internet simultaneously.

Go out and buy a wireless router. Connect the wireless router to your cable modem.

Connect your desktop to the wireless router with an ethernet cable.

Then you should have internet on your desktop.

Can`t connect to aol will not ping and ports don`t work


This means your router or modem has problem, connect straight from your modem and check if you have internet, if there is nothing? check the cable and the network card, if everything is fine, contact your internet provider.

My compaq prasario is telling me I have no ip address how can i solve this problem i cannot connect to the internet


How are you connecting to the Internet now¿ That is a serious question since I will assume that this is a second computer hooked up to the same connection you want with the Presario. I also will assume that you don't have a Gateway / Router between the modem and the actual computer. I will assume that you want both of these computers on the Internet at the same time so you will want to hook up the Gateway. To reset the modem so that it will accept a different MAC Address (It's a computer thing) you will need to remove all the connections to the modem and pull out the battery that is behind a hidden door. The modem will need to be in this condition for 1 minute and then it can be hooked up to the new Gateway or Computer however you want it to be hooked up now that the modem has been reset. Good luck.

Modem connection/comcast cable


Hi,

Depending on what modem was issued to you by Comcast, it could be connected to your computer by either a USN cable or a LAN cable. If you availed of the "free self-install kit", then you would need to buy a LAN/Ethernet cable, as to my understanding Comcast does not issue this with the modem/router. Additional information may be sourced from here.

Compaq presario c500..what do i need to buy or purchase to use the internet?


This model has a wireless network adapter built in, so if you are on DSL isp connection you need a wireless DSL modem/router, if cable then a cable router to attach to your cable modem.
