I have a Pixma MP800 and want to print a document with black text only. The PGI-5Bk black cartridge is full, the others (CLI-8Bk,8Y,8M and 8C) are empty or nearly empty.
When I try to print using greyscale, I get a U041 "Ink has run out" message, but as I only want to print B&W should it matter that the colour cartridges are empty?
Is there a way to over-ride this error & print my B&W document...?
No you cant print with emapty colour catridges you have to install the other full catridges.

Canon is Garb If you have no ink in the cartridges then You could either by new ones(Da!) or recharge and reset the chip on them. Not sure maybe only resetting the chip might do the trick!
While googleing hit this site You might find a compatible solution there!

Or buy this set:

Good luck!
There sure is, replace the ink. The printer logic test for the ink levels during the printer's POST (Power On Self Test)
I believe the larger "Black Cartridge" is used for text only on Canon printers. I'm just not absolutely certain
Please make sure that you replace the ink with only Canon ink cartridges. This will prevent problems with contaminated ink.

thing is, I only want to print black text & the large black cartridge (PGI-5Bk) is full. I don't really care about printing in colour - the other cartridges have dried up through lack of use & it isn't worth the expense of replacing them if they're not used.
Does anyone know of any technical reason why Canon printers need the colour cartdridges to be full even when only printing back text?
