I will take a guess that you are trying to pair with something other than a bluetooth headset. The iPhone cannot connect (even though it may pair okay) to other phones, headphones, or any device other than a bluetooth headset. This feature is intentionally crippled by Apple.
If my assumption is wrong, please provide additional information about what exactly you are trying to do (and with what) to get your problem resolved.

iphone will also pair with some handsfree sat navs like the Garmin Nuvi 510 and work very well but will not work with Navman s50 even though it will pair with the navman the unit will have nothing to do with the iphone.. it is all very inconsistent
