Kenmore 70 Series Top Loan - Fill Cycle won't stop when full

I have a Kenmore 70 Series top load washer that I purchased in 2001. Yesterday the washer seemed to stick in the fill cycle and flooded my house. I was able to spin the water out in the spin cycle, but it even when the water level dial is changed to a lower setting, the water just keeps running. Sears is telling me they can't come out to look at it for 3 weeks. Anyone have any suggestions that we can look at on our own? Thank you!

Yes, the water stops when I push the timer in. Only other thing I can get it to do is to move it over to the spin cycle and it will spin and drain the water. Any other setting will just start the water filling again.

I have a Hotpoint washer and the washer overflows with water leaking out the bottom and won't go to the wash cycle. I can move the knob to get it t rinse and spin.

Does the water stop when you push the timer in or are you having to shut the spigots off?? If it stops when the timer is pushed in then you have a problem with the pressure switch. There are quite a few tricks to axcessing your machine's components but if you are handy ill attemt to help.
