Question about Sony KP-65XBR10W 65" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Sony KP-65XBR About 8 months ago out tv started showing curved diagonal lines (blue we think) in the darker scenes.  At the same time the black level seemed to suffer.  Then one day, we heard a loud crack, the screen flashed green, and the set turned off. This now happens - with no discernible pattern. Sometimes you can turn the set back on, sometimes you have to unplug it.  Often you will turn the set on and the picture will be fine, and then a faint blue wash will appear over everything - not Blue Man Group blue - more like a very light filter. Any ideas?  Should we get it repaired, or get a new model with 1080p and HDMI inputs?  Sony no longer makes a 65" set, so I guess we'll have to go with 60" (Sony or Samsung) or the 65" Mitsubishi - tho I hear they have had service problems. Thanks! Eileen

Confirm the actual model number as the one indicated in the title is not HD.

Some of these sets had bad picture tubes that on a black screen or blank video input may in your case show faint curved lines and or some color (red, green or blue) present in the background.

If this is the case there is a fairly simple way to attempt to adjust something for this--not in the customer menu but fairly easy to get at and try.

Most of these sets were KP51ws500, 57500 etc.

You need to adjust (actually bit decrease) G2 volts (calls Screen volts) of Blue gun.
If you are familiar with big TV repair and have electronics knowledge then let me know to guide you further.

Curved blue lines on screen.

You have a completely different problem. The screen voltage for the blue picture tube is slightly too high on your set. This will put fine lines in the background of the picture, called retrace lines. This is very common and easy to correct. Remove the front speaker cover and the access panel behind it. Look inside and you will see a black box with six controls, each control having a little white glue on it. This is the Focus/Screen block. Three controls are labeled Focus and three are labeled Screen. The screen control in the center is for green but I am not sure if the screen control on the left or right is for blue for your model. With the TV on, set it to VIDEO 1 but do not connect anything to the VIDEO 1 jacks. This will produce a pure dark picture, showing any faint lines in the background. Choose one of the screen controls and increase (turn clockwise) it slightly. If the blue lines do not get brighter it means you are turning the red screen control, so put it back where it was and choose the other screen control. When you find the blue screen control, decrease (turn counter-clockwise) it until just when the blue lines are gone. If you want you can check that the red and green screen controls are set to just below the point where their faint lines are visible. When done, replace the panels and your picture will be back to perfect.

ITS PROBABLY THE RED PICTURE TUB (CRT). IT LOOKS EASY TO INSTALL, BUT YOU NEED TO MAKE ADJUSTMENTS TO THE SCREEN ONCE IT IS INSTALLED. THE PART IS $3OO. TRY TO FIND SOMEONE TO INSTALL IT FOR $150 OR LESS. HERE IS A WEBSITE TO HELP YOU MAKE ADJUSTMENT IN THE FUTURE ON YOU OWN.

there's a lot of talk in the internet that the pots in the front of the tv will take these (horizontal?) lines out . i have the kp-57hw40, and there is a web site with pictures on making the adjustment. i believe the bottom 3 pots are blue, green, red going from left to right. mark the pots first so you know where you started, and they say it takes just a hair adjustment counter clockwise to remove the lines. Only go to the point the lines disappear. web site shows how to get front cover off via two screws hidden in bottom and then take off the cardboard cover to get at pots. Not to be smart, but don't be careless, keep hands out since there are high voltage circuits just inside there. . . .
