Buzzing noise and burned magnetron antenna

I posted a help request a while ago. I have an XL1800 manufactured in 2004. About a year after we had it, during a cook cycle it would make a terrible, loud buzzing noise (like it was going to blow up) - like a shorting transformer. I replaced the magnetron and the same thing happens. I tested the diode (read inf in both directions with a fresh 9V battery in my multimeter) so I ordered another. However, this new diode from GE also reads inf in both directions - anyone have a solution for that one? But my main quetsion is that I noticed on both magnetrons that I pulled out, there is charring on the dome - or antenna (I assume that's what it is - the brass-colored portion that goes into the waveguide).

Is something more serious happening here than the magnetron simply shorting out? How could the dome get burned?!

Thanks a lot for any help.

I purchased my GE Profile Spacesaver Micro in October 2005 and am having the same problem. Sears wants to charge $252.00 to fix it. I don't know what to do. It is too new to have such a pricey repair needed.

  • daveu Jan 15, 2008

    Guest,

I wouldn't let Sears repair it for $250. It's likely the magnetron, which GE will supply you for free (it's under warranty for 8 years, I think). Anyway, I've requested and received two of them for free thus far. If you're handy, it's not hard to figure out how to replace it - there's tons of info on the web. Otherwise, it'd take an electrician maybe 15 minutes to do it.

Photo of Magnetron tip and Inside the Dome of the waveguide. I called GE asking for a new Magnetron 0M75P(10) since it has a 9 year warranty. I have to call back tommorow since parts desk was closed. I can see how this could start a fire. Mark.

Just a follow up. Called GE Parts and thy "can't" send me a new magnetron tube. Must be done by a authorized service rep. It's GE policy as this is a dangerous, restricted part. So I can pay $100 to have a service rep come out or $45 to buy a part online for what is suposed to be under warranty. :-p Last GE appliance I every buy. After the $45 SmartFilters in the refrigerator they have convinced me 2X they want out of the business.

I have a JVM1871SH03 microwave. It was installed in JUne 2006. IN Dec 2007 the magentron tube was replaced because their was no heat. Now it's March 2009 and the magentron is not working again. Anyone having the same issue. Is this a manufacturing defect.

Seems you've posted on this several times, and I've answered them all, but I'll cover this one, too.

GE had a campaign (but not a recall, mind you!) covering several models.

Details are in their bulletin at http://207.234.249.73/mwd/ge_mw_mag_kit_bulletin.pdf

Even if your model is not on the list, the same problem can occur, requiring a kit. I just think the difference is that GE has stopped paying for the repairs.

The parts kit (that GE used to pay for) is part # WB27X10489 and is shown in the photo below.

We're happy to help and we appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

I have a JVM1630WB004 Spacesaver, about 8 years old. Following the advice here, I contacted GE and was successful in getting them to ship me the WB27X10489 repair kit directly to my home, free. When I pulled the old magnetron, it looked exactly like the pictures here. The end antenna cap was completely burned away, with obvious keating and discoloration of the waveguide near the antenna cap. I brushed and vacuumed the interior of the waveguide to remove any debris and installed the three parts in the kit. The repair worked perfectly! The oven seems to heat about 33% better than immediately before it failed. I am a bit concerned about the burned waveguide, but figured as long as the metal was not perforated, it should be fine.

SOURCE: burned magnetron antenna

The average multimeter does not output enough voltage to forward bias a high voltage diode, so it will seem to read open. This is normal.

It still may need a new high-voltage diode and stirrer, and the cavity may be affected.

I'm afraid you won't get the help you need here; you need to go to the manufacturer's website and look for 'support' or 'repair' or 'dealer' links.
BTW, it was the 'magnetron' that was likely the part that failed in that earlier unit.

It sounds like a bad filter capacitor on the circuit board, which we repair often, and possibly a bad door switch.

We would need to know you full model number from the tag in or on the unit.

FixYa does not currently notify us experts when someone replies to help requests, so you would need to post a new help request with the same info you did, but include your full model number.

GE Spacemake XL1800 whines every time it cooks works great the

The charcoal filter must be changed every 6-12 months, depending on how much and how the oven is used.

If a filter clogs, it will interfere with cooling and lead to magnetron damage.

It may also be putting a strain on the cooling fan or hood vent exhaust fan, or one of those fans may have a blade loose on the motor shaft.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts (including filters) by entering your full model number here.

You either have a bad magnetron tube (5 or 10 year parts warranty item through GE Factory Service 1-800-432-2737 or www.geappliances.com) or a shorted high voltage rectifier. I think the light being out is a secondary problem.

I do a lot of work on Dacors / Sharps. Can you describe what you mean by "shutting off"? When it was shutting off before, was it completely dead with no display and no beeps? Was iut shutting off during a cook cycle or just while setting there or what? When it would come back on or start working again, how long did it take to come back, or how did you make it come back on?
