Question about Pro RX65 Radar Detector

Bel RX65 not working properly

I have had the RX65 for about 5 months and it has worked just fine. All of a sudden it is not working properly. It turns on and cycles through the bands but after about 5 seconds it no longer does anything. It freezes up and all the buttons stop working. It is also not picking up radar signals now. Any suggestions?

I have the same problem. when you plug it in the lights on the cigarette lighter side flash for a second and then go off. No lights opn the unit. Have changed the lead with a working one. same thing. Help

yea mine does the same. like it goes threw everything than say like x band off and ka off and no buttons work.

  • Anonymous Jun 01, 2008

Have a similar problem, but once the unit went trough the initial loop it stopped working at all. Power plug lights are both lit, but the unit itself seems to be dead: no reaction to buttons clicks, reset sequence, etc.

Had it of slightly more than a year :-(

Mine turns on for a second and turns right back off. It does the same thing in all of my other cars. Could it be a faulty cord?

Regarding the problem of the unit turning on for a second, then turning off after you plug it in....

Plug it in and hold the power button down for 5 seconds. This resets the unit. The unit will still turn off after this however. After that, push the power button on again for one second and it should remain on. Good Luck!

My radar detector says selfcalc when it turns on and then says service required. Can i fix this my self or have to send it back to get fixed?

I have the same problem. I chatted with Bel and here's the transcript, FYI:

chatinfo.gifWelcometo Beltronics.! An online representative will be with you shortly. Youare number 1 in the queue. Your wait time will be approximately 1 and 9seconds. Thank you for waiting.

Brian: Welcome to Beltronics Live Chat. How may I assist you today?
you: Hi Brian, I
you: own a Bel pro rx65
you: and it gave an error
you: that said
you: selfcal4
you: or something like that
you: then it said service
you: required
you: what does this mean?
Brian: Thereare a number of things that may cause this ERROR message. Please besure that you are getting consistent voltage (does the lighter socketstay ON all the time? Does it do the same thing in other vehicles?). If the display reads "Service Required" not caused by the above, itmeans it has failed it's self-calibration and requires service. Pleasecall our Customer Service Department at 800-341-2288 and they will giveyou a repair authorization number and instructions on how to return itto us so we can take a look at your detector.
you: Oh i see. what's the cost for repair?
Brian: That is a $59.95 repair fee. To set that up, please call Customer Service at 800-964-3138, option 2.
you: and what cause calibration to fail?
Brian: If the reasons listed above don't sound like what's happening, then it would be up to a repair tech to figure out why.
you: I had left it in the car in hot weather. would this be a cause?
Brian: It's possible, over a long time in the heat to develop.
you: I can call either number correct?
Brian: Correct.
you: ok thanks

I called the number and they were helpful, told me to use a packing service like UPS and such. Insure it. And it would take about 5-7 days for them to work on it, another 3-4 days of shipping time.
Considering the reviews on the rx65 and the prices for detectors out there, and considering that they will also apply any software updates (bought mine in '06) the $60 repair fee is worth it for me.

Display shows "H 14.4 V". Doesn't appear to work.

I'm pretty sure that this is caused by a failed internal capacitor, and that this probably was caused by a sudden voltage spike while starting your car. You will have to send your RX65 to Bel/Escort for repair. While they are at it, they will also upgrade your RX65's firmware to whatever their latest firmware version is, even though the firmware version displayed on your RX65 won't be different when you get it back. Also, I always power my RDs on after I have started my car. This avoids the possibility of sudden voltage spikes damaging my RDs.

No display

Have you tried doing a factory reset of the firmware as described in the user manual? To do this, first power off your RX65 using its power button. Then hold down the two buttons which are used to enter Program Mode and, while holding down these two buttons, press the Power button again. Release all three buttons when the word "Reset" is displayed on the LED display. Obviously, if the display doesn't light up, then either the display itself is defective or one of its display leads has a cold solder joint.

If your RX65 is in warranty and you can make a photocopy of your sales receipt, then Bel will repair it at no charge. You will have to pay the shipping cost to Bel.

Problem to turn on my RX65

Obviously you have pressed the power button on your RX65 in order to try to power it up since you mention that the green light on the SmartCord comes on. Here is one possible solution, which resolves any stored user settings which might have become corrupted due to power fluctuations:

First, press the power button so that the radar detector is turned off (green light is off). Then hold down the two buttons used for programming and, while holding these programming buttons down, press the power button. Release all three buttons once you see "RESET" displayed on the RX65's display. Your RX65 has now restored all factory default settings from a separate area of programmed memory, and this (hopefully) will restore your RX65 to proper operation.

Hi everyone,

Bel/Escort now uses a special and proprietary "high temp" speaker which resolves issues of speakers blowing due to high ambient temperatures or heat which builds up within the speaker when it is alerting for extended periods of time. If your RX65 is in warranty and you can make a photocopy of your sales receipt, then great! All you have to pay is shipping to Bel. Bell will replace the speaker with the new version, flash your RX65 with whatever the latest firmware is, and calibrate and test your RX65 too. So, all of this is peachy if your RX65 is under warranty.

If your RX65 is out-of-warranty or if it doesn't have a serial number or was bought from a non-authorized dealer, then the service charge as I recall is $80. Thats not bad since your RD will come back working like brand new.

A note about the speakers: They are made by PUI, but the speakers are proprietary to Bel/Escort. Thus you can not buy them from any source -- not even direct from PUI.

Service needed

The internal self-calibration procedure has repeatedly failed, causing your RX65 to display the Service Required message. You need to send it to Bel for repair.

Call Beltronics tell them you have an RX65 out of warranty. They charge about $65. When I did mine I sent them only the detector and they also set me a new cord & suction cups.
