One of your tapes has gone bad. It may be knotted up inside the cartridge, so that it works for a short time before becoming to difficult for the drive to spin, popping the belt - or the belt may pop seconds after you insert it. To fix this, put the belt back on and then insert each of your tapes until you find the one that pops the belt (or just sounds obviously difficult for your drive to spin), and remove it from rotation.

Btw - I'm a field engineer for a tech company that services about 800 customers on the east cost - I see (and fix) this problem, with this drive about once a day.

How to Clean a Travan 40

Travan 40 tape drive, manufactured by the leading data storage and backup device manufacturer Quantum, uses the tape storage business to 40 gigabytes of data. It can be installed on any Windows computer, and works as an additional unit similar to a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM. Like a tape of age, Travan 40 used with the recording heads for data storage on tape. These heads have to be cleaned, and Quantum recommends using a cleaning tape.

1. Turn on the computer. Remove the cleaning cartridge of your case.

2. Insert the cleaning cartridge into the Travan 40 drive, with the metal plate down. Gently push the drive mechanism that pulls and keeps everything in the device.

3. Look at the LED on the drive Travan, should stop blinking and turns off in about 8 seconds. Note that the LED will remain on the cartridge is used more often than not meant to be used and, if so, remove it and put a new cleaning cartridge.

4. Slide the unit Eject button and hold and pull the exposed sides of the car once the disc is ejected.

5. Hi,

You will have to load a driver for the Travan drive, if windows server 2000 sees the tap drive you could use NTbackup.exe to configure a back-up here is a link to read more about it. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/237310/

Driver for Travan NS tape drive?

Hi Nick,

The only drivers that are published for the NS 20 are for Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0. The 2003 and XP versions shouldn't require a driver - they should be able to treat the tape drive as plug-and-play (just like a hard drive) as long as it's plugged into an IDE slot on your motherboard.

For your reference, the following webpage has the drivers that are available for the NS 20, as well as a link to the user manual (near the bottom of the page). The manual includes details about the installation procedure, which does not include any kind of driver. Here's the address:

http://www.quantum.com/ServiceandSupport/SoftwareandDocumentationDownloads/Travan20SCSI/Index.aspx#Drivers

I hope this helps - pleawse let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

Most tape drivers are loaded from withing the backup software. Symantec and CA work like this. I'd start there.

If not you have to start the remote storage service and check in device manager to see what it defaults to and see if will find the device for you.
