Insert a memory card (in my case a SD CARD) and SLOWLY extract card until error message clears and normal screen images appear.I had to do this several times but it worked for me but cannot guarantee it will for everybody.GOOD LUCK.

I had the exact same problem. I turned on my HP Photosmart E317 camera and it would light up for one second and then just a blank screen.
Here's the tech support site from HP. Try taking out your memory card and then turn it on. That worked for me. I just put the memory card back in and it works fine.
