It could be hardware or software. I would probably try a repair install first. If it works you will not lose any of your files. Take a look at this website:

    http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepa...

There are good step-by-step directions on how to perform this task. If this fails I would next download Seatools from Seagate. It will work even if you don't have a Seagate hard drive. If need to try this step and can't find them let me know. You'll need to create a bootable CD once you've downloaded them. Again, ask if you need help.

This can be a tough problem to solve. It may not be solveable so I'm whimping out and putting this under the "Request for additional Information" so you cannot rate me. I don't get paid for this...it's just a hobby. Lots of people who visit this website are wary of replying to problems like yours because it may not be fixable and then we get a bad rating. If I've actually helped at all and you want to rate me, let me know and I'll post something under a solution....in any event good luck.

I think its your harddrive mate,, it might not be connected propperly or its dead, look at the connection and ensure its connected, if it is connected correctly, you may need to change it..

Error code 00F0:136C IDE FAILED BLANK MEDIA OR NO MEDIA IS PRESENT IN OPTICAL DRIVE. IS THE HDD FRIED OR WHAT?

Hi,

You probably ran the 32-bit diagnostics in this Dell computer.

The error code 00F0:136C, actually is talking about the "OPTICAL DRIVE,"which is your CD/DVD ROM; not the hard drive.

That will fail since, I am assuming you didn't put anything inside the CD-ROM.

The diagnostics tests everything and in this case, it tested the CD-ROM and failed since there is no CD inside the CD/DVD-ROM.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Oliver

the diagnostic was looking for media in the CD drive during the test. If the drive works in Windows and reads media or you can boot to the CD drive, then there is nothing wrong.

It appears your hard disk has died and it may not be possible for you to retrieve your data.
Remove your hard drive from the laptop and insert it into an USB harddrive adapter, (they are not expensive and you can use it later as a external hard drive). Then plug it into the USB port of a working computer. The computer should/may see it as an external drive, if you are lucky you will be able to copy your data, if not, you are out of luck.
There are companies that can recover data from faulty hard drives, but it will cost you an arm and a leg for their service.
