I think its your harddrive mate,, it might not be connected propperly or its dead, look at the connection and ensure its connected, if it is connected correctly, you may need to change it..

My battery wont charge and the battery light on laptop flashes a few times orange and green and i went into settings it says its idle and not installed for my dell latitude d600

The battery has a fault and needs to be replaced. Unfortunately when you get this condition is is usually a dead cell in the battery and to try and force charge it is dangerous.

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect your hard drive
Test the leads that attach to your ((hard drive from the motherboard)) or replace all the leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions + IDE,SATA and the ones that attach from your ((motherboard to hard drive))
or just replace them they are probably old and faulty a computer needs its connections to have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error

hope this helps

just try cleaning the lens by ejecting the drive with a cotton bud dipped in spirit /alcohol as dust particles accumulate on it and obstruct the laser beam if not then you need to get it serviced or replace the drive with a new one

Your dell seems to have a bad hard drive. The "DST" is a Drive Self Test. This test determines whether or not your drive can start up and read and write. When you have this failure you can sometimes recover some of the data but you probably will not be able to boot the computer if you have not been able to do so thus far. If your dell is still under warranty I would recommend that you call dell and see if you can get it replaced.

If you do not know if your dell is under warranty you can get on another computer and open your internet browser and navigate to

Click on (Start Here) under "Support for Home Users"
On the top right hand side of the of the page hover over "Warranty Information" and click on "Warranty Status"

On that page you want to enter in your Service Tag. That can be located on the bottom of your laptop usually on a white or black sticker.

Once you find out if your laptop is under warranty you can call dells support line to see if you can get it repaired. You may need to provide the error code to them in order to get a replacement.

it sounds like the easiest solution would to either run the repair sequence from a windows xp disk (may not be a perminant fix) if that doesent work just use the xp disk to format the drive and install a new operating system
