Kenmore Model # 22956. Top half of agitator appears to be loose. Will not agitate steadily. Can put light pressure with hand on top and it seems to work properly but I can't stand there with my hand on it. Bottom part works. Is there an easy way to get agitator off ? Something seems to be stripped. Thanks for any help. WJA

The agitator dogs (little dog ear gears) are stripped. This is a very easy fix and the new dogs are very cheap. Go down to an appliance part store and ask them for agitator dogs for a direct drive whirlpool washer. Ill help too with installtion

Will not spin

The final cycle of any washing machine, including Whirlpool units, is the spin cycle. During this cycle, water is sucked out of the load, preparing the clothes for the dryer. If your spin cycle isn't working properly, your clothes will be extremely wet, which increases the length of the drying process. Troubleshoot, and repair this problem yourself to save money

Not washing, drain and spin ok but no washing in any cycle

Have you checked the nut at the top of the agitator and made sure that it isn't loose? If that isn't it then things get ugly fast.

The agitator is not turning but i can hear the mechanism turning inside the agitator. is there a sheer pin broken? this is a roper heavy duty / large cap.( model #ral5144awo) top load washer.

AGIT DOGS ,,, go get or order whirlpool part number 80040
replace those and you should be good to go.. they are under the cap and have lil grippers on them that wear down and help rotate the agaitator assy..

Aprox 1989 model, (cant find model#) will not go in to spin cycle, just before it stoped I noticed clothing extra wet before spin quit completely. cant turn the tub by hand.

Model number is probably visible on small sticker on top after you take the upper rear panel off (6 screws). Water pump tends to get a loose retainer that digs into the housing and hinders then stops the free turning of the belt.

Loud banging

Several possibilities for noise. check concrete balance wieghts at top and bottom of washer, make sure they are not loose.
Check drum restraint spring(s) are not broken.
Check suspension legs for wear.
Check for loose motor fixings.
Finally, remove drum belt, and spin drum by hand, tjhere should be noise from bearings, if it feels rough or is rumbling , then main bearings have failed.

Very noisy spin cycle

It would be highly appriciated if you would have mentioned the model or the make of the washer. As the product you have selected is Hotpoint , I am providing you the troubleshooting steps for resolution based on it.

The major reason of noise during spin is a loose balance weight, or worn drum bearings.
Remove belt and spin drum by hand from the inside, if you can hear a rumbling noise, or any noise, or it feels stiff to turn then the bearings have failed. If it is under 5 years old, then it should still be under warrenty provided you did not buy it from Comet or Currys.
If it is balance weight, you will be able to feel movement, there is one at top and one at bottom of m/c.
Let us know if you need any further information. God Bless.

It quit on the last spin cycle of one load and then next time we tried to use it. Machine filled up but wouldn't work at all. Does it have a belt that might be broken and if so how do you get to it?

if the motor is running, and you can turn the adjetator by hand, it could be the belt which is usually accesable from the back of the machine. if the motor is not running it is more than likely the lid switch is bad. in that case try by passing the lid switch to see if it works with out it. you can do this by un plugging the lid switch and placing a jumper wire in the connector.

Good advice, but to my surprise, part not broken

  • if the bolts in the transmission are too loose, then the plastic piece may not disengage the break (rare).
  •  can you turn the plastic piece  and spin the tub? you should be able to do it with your hand, turn it (i think counter clock wise) and you will feel the break disengage and the tub should spin freely.
  • check that plastic piece good because its just a small tabs that breaks off usually.
