I can tell you how i finally did it...

I made my own ringtone on my pc, kept it around 20 sec.
Send it to the phone by bluetooth. It went to my sounds.
From my sounds I went to "send", and send it to myself by phone (dialed my own cell number). When I received it, I saved it as ringtone.
I hope it helped, Good luck!

I am trying to change my text message ringtone. I would like to put a song from my music as a message ringtone.

Thank you for using FixYa,
You can't change the messaging tone to a song from your music playlist, these options for choosing your own music as ringtones are restricted to an alarm tone, phone ringtone and caller ringtone (caller ringtone is when specific people calls you, a certain ringtone would appear for that caller to differentiate between callers)
However, you can change your message ringtone to certain ringtones for your Galaxy S phone by going through the following steps: (P.S I am assuming that you are using the stock Samsung SMS application)
1) Go to your stock Samsung SMS app (it's named as 'Messaging')
2) Press the softkey 'menu' button
3) Go to settings, scroll down and from there you can see the option 'select ringtone'

Trying to assign ring tones to person

first the person should be in your phone memory contact list not the memory card/sim card
second copy the song to the phone memory
and then go into the phonebook select the contact and edit it and there you will find the option for assigning a ringtone.
