I have a problem whereas I can look at pictures already taken. This shows the screen is not the problem. If I choose th take a movie or a picture then my screen is black except for small icons for mode selections. In other words if I take a picture or movie if will be viewed in black. I took the camera apart and found nothing obivious. Anyone with a soluition?

    I have the same problem

  • cantor1145 Jun 08, 2008

For a while the camera was blinking "need new battery pack". I bought a new battery and now the camera has a black screen, no images can be seen. I am wondering if the menu needs adjustment. I don't know what the resolution and everything else should be.

Thanks so much for your help.

Don't open it up. Give it to me instead, or check this out, think you'll be happy. This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:

Incredible!...

I had the same problem with my old s230... I called canon Chile and they replaced my loved but non functional powershot s230 for a brand new (not so new ;) ) SD1100 IS.

Greetings from Chile,
Patricio

Wow seriously they sent you an SD600? What an improvement. I've had my SD230 since Dec '03, so I'd love to get this either fixed or replaced. I seem to have the same CCD problem.
I have a question, to the people who held down the "Display" button, how did it prompt for factory reset? When I try that nothing happens. Actually, the screen does start to flicker like it's fixing the problem, but then it goes black again.
Thanks, Ryan

Glad I ran across this site too. Same as everyone else, has a black screen, no LCD viewfinder but able to view per recorded images and menu.

Thank you,

I had the same problem with my s230. I just tried the "hold the display button down for several seconds" and BINGO! It's back in action. That saved me a couple hundred $$

THANKS!!!

I called tech support and a factory reset worked perfectly.
press the Display button for several seconds and a screen comes up asking if you want to do a factory reset, say ok, and the lcd lit up.

If you do a little looking around on the internet you will find out that canon will repair or replace your camera. My camera and my sons had the same problem. Canon replaced both with 7.1 and 6.5 mega pixel cameras plus memory card, battery, charger and leather case. You need to get a little demanding with Canon because they try to tell you that it must have been dropped or something. Just let them know you get a black screen on still or movie pictures. The review mode does work. good luck.

I have the same problem with my S230, contacted Canon and it's off with UPS to be fixed. I can only hope I get a new one too as a 7.1 meg pixel would be a big improvement! As for repair, that would also be nice given it's age. Thanks for the info on this site.

Update: Just got a box from Canon. Letter states they didn't have the parts to fix my S230 so they sent me a nwe SD600. I guess I can't complain, for free. The old S230 was 4 years old.
Thanks again

Purchased Canon PowerShot S230 Digital

Tsk, tsk, a nice camera like the S230, and you've only used it once. The battery should be dead by now but can easily and cheaply be replaced from Amazon. And yes, your camera will soon be reborn, only this time use it and enjoy it.

The problem you describe sounds like a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status, even after all these years. Please check the following two links for more info:

Oh, and here's a good replacement battery:
