MDS-JE480 MiniDisc Deck

All of a sudden, after inserting the mini disc, "TOC Reading" appears, then disc is ejected and C13 error code appears. Reinserting the disc or any other disc I have does not solve the problem. What is my recourse

Sony MDS-JE780...Inserting disc..C13 error READ CODE, keeps ejecting disc so dont know what to do

  • brainboy60 Oct 31, 2008

I'm afraid the previous response is not a lot of help (sorry!) - all the manual says is that you should take out the MD and insert it again - then the same thing happens.

After spending a bit of time with this problem, it seems to me that that the player thinks there is a disc in the machine, even when it is empty. I don't know whether this is a physical or electronic problem.

Hello,
The problem with the TOC reading and then appearing C13 is a problem with bad electrical contacts.
Remove the connection to the mains outlet, remove the top cover (5screws) and the remove the 2 paper flatcables that connect the main PCB and the disk unit on both sides. Plug them back in and possible your problem is solved.
A better solution is, of coarse, to replace both cables by new ones, as the quality is rather bad, and once disconnected, they should be replaced.
Good luck!!!

I had the same problem with a SONY MXD-D40 (Error C13). I opened the cover and gently turned the white wheel which guides the laser. After a small turn 1-2mm a small click was heard. I inserted a Md and the player was functioning again as it should.

Hope this will help some of you,

Good luck

Mds je780 player recorder

this instructions may apply to other similar built units as well

generally the c13 error points to a laser read problem which could be caused by:

1) laser power to weak

2) dirt on the laser, finger prints or other stuff on the disk

3) spindle motor incorrect speed or unstable run

4) ! also a faulty end switch can disable the laser from reading the toc !

5) check if the disk is spinning & the laser is moving to the most inner position

on the back of the laser unit is a wheel you can move to shift the laser towards an outer position (when you power up or insert a disk the laser should move towards centre)

power off & open unit

cleaned the laser with a cotton bud ! carefully please !

unplug the 2 ribbon cables on both sides

(you may now replug the ribbons & test playback)

removed laser unit & check if the laser itself has a small adjust fitted to it

memorise or mark the position (should be close to centre position)

move it for & back to remove possible dust/corrosion build up

put it back into original position, now move it ccw by a small fraction

this should increase/decrease the laser power for reading

(you may reassemble & test to see if that solved your problem)

to test switches you have to removed the board on the bottom side

locate 3 pins for an interconnect & 6 solder spots for 3 motors, removed the solder & removed a support screw, now you should be able to pull the board away for a short fraction!

unplug another ribbon & 2 way plug

locate the 4 switches test & resolder them, also resolder the 2 way plug

the motors are disconnected now & can be tested with a 1.5v battery

watch: the spindle motor has a spring that acts as a brake ! & must be in the nylon wheel beneath the platter

watch out when refitting the board:

put the laser into middle position

& check that the switches for the loading mech are not jamming, use a needle to push into position

resolder & reassemble unit

good luck James

i am very surprised at a big company like SONY and people are having so many problems with this open mg jukebox as i myself is having. I recently purchased a JE 780 minidisc recorder on e-bay but the seller did not send me the open mg software disc,so now i have spent DAYS trying to get some sense out of SONY to rectify but they dont want to know, shame on you SONY

Either the laser can't read the disc anymore, or you have a bad internal cable. Usually cheaper to buy another unit.

Dear phonophyle

You can find out what the C13 error means by reading the troubleshooting section in the mannual given with it. Generally the troubleshooting section is in the form of a tabularcolumn towards the end.

Thankyou

The error statement indicates the disc cannot be read by the recorder, it may be dirty or damaged or recorded in an extended format which this deck cannot read.

1) It's more likely your laser died than the the drive failed.

2) Run back to your repair guy, and when they fix it (IF they fix it), ask to see it work before you go home. They damned well better fix it for free!

3) Buy another one on eBay.

C13 means the machine cannot read the TOC on the disc. It is possible you have a disc with a bad TOC. You may have left it near a magnetic field, such as a speaker or a component transformer. Try another disc. Or take a disc and erase it, then record on it. See what happens.

Hi every time I load a minidisc into my MDS-JE480 minidisc player I get "C13 read error". There is nothig at all wrong wth the discs as they are playing and recording normally on my other minidisc player.

The error means that the player is unable to read the table of contents (TOC) on discs any more.If it's an occasional error then you can try switching to TDK blanks as they seem to be easier for flaky players to read, but if it's happening regularly to all discs then your machine is unrepairable due to a total lack of spare parts.

On the plus side, there are millions of MD units now lying unused as folks have moved on from them and as they're mostly worthless people don't generally bother with trying to sell them. Almost every piece of MD gear I own has come free of charge via my local FreeCycle and Freegle groups. Whatever you do, don't buy a used player from anyone: they're all getting on now and the TOC error is an age-related fault which may occur at any time.

If you wish to see exactly what features other machines have then visit the superb equipment browser at minidisc.org. The site is hosted but n longer maintained though so some information is out of date, but it's still the most comprehensive source of free information about MD available.

Sorry here's probably no hope for your MDS-JE480, but I hope that my reply has given you a practical alternative means of solving your problem.

C13 error !!!!

Amazing what google can find...

I was ion touch with the Sony tech dept. If you get a C13 error it's because of dust on the lens causing TOC read errors. I didn't have any compressed air in a can so I used a soccer ball hand pump and pumped a ton of air just inside the door of the unit. 2 seconds later it worked fine. No cleaner MD needed.
