Yes, if the little "nipple" on the power head that plugs into the switch hole isn't broken off, than you probably need a new switch. I have written a repair guide to do this repair yourself. The folks who have used it have found it to be very helpful. Just click on the link to view the guide...

Kirby switches are complicated and expensive. Replacing one is very involved and requires that the machine be almost totally dissmantled. It sounds like the agitator housing is not going on far enough to press the part of the switch that governs that function. Take the housing off again and re-install it and turn on the machine. If it still doen't run, grab the housing but the sides, (careful of the roller if it starts) and wiggle it or rock it. This will usually trigger the switch to come on. If not, you will probably have to refer the repair to a competent repair shop. This repair can cost almost $100.00. The switch itself can cost $60.00.
OUCH.

Kirby works with the brush roller head; but not the hose attachment (won't start with hose attachment)

The part of the hose that attaches to the vacuum should push on the switch on the front of the vacuum so it won't come on without the nozzle or hose attached. Inspect the hose to see if that part may be broken or not making good contact to activate the switch,

I have cleared the vacuum hose and the attached motor unit. I cannot get the brush going. What else can I do? I have also checked the connections.

I assume the brush head has a motor, if this is correct you need to get a AC volt meter and see if voltage is present at the motor, if it is the motor is defective and must be replaced, if it is no present then the cord to the motor that runs down the hose is defective or the connection to the motor is defective, use an ohm meter and do continuity tests to determine the place the open circuit is, if you are not familiar with electrical testing a vacuum repair shop can tell you what u need very quickly with a few simple tests, my local shop does this many times free of charge as long as u buy the parts from the shop..

Hi How do I attached the hose onto the upright G5 model?

First, twist the belt lifter dial on the front of your kirby roller brush head counter clockwise to take the belt off the motor fan pulley, then undo the latch at the top of the head to release it from the vacuum body, then take your hose and mount it to the place where the head was hooked onto then lock it down with the latch at the top of the hose. That should get you going.

My kirby generation 3 wont come on

Make sure cord is not damaged. Check to see nothing is blocking hose or carpet nozzle(where beater brush is or brush roll). Plug unit in to a receptacle that you know has power going to it. (Lamp you know works when plugged into same. Using hose on front, make sure bag bottom completely attached to exhaust, the hose has a little arm like thing that will depress the safety switch on the front of the unit, and turn on using foot switch at the back of the unit. If these do not work, it could be one of two safety switches, dirt may have fouled or switch may need to be replaced. Kirby turns on with hose attachement but not with head attachment

Front of the unit, black switch that is pressed by this plastic protrusion from hose coupling has two parts. It is because ANY generation Kirby has speeds - HIGH for vacuuming with hose and LOW for using it with nozzle.
Looks like the switch went bad (Switch HERE)

We have instructions for replacing it too.
The "funny noise" with hose throws me off a bit though. Check if there is nothing in the hose (put a nickle through it).

Good Luck

How do I attach my hose to the vacum to use the accessories

Make sure the height adjustment is all the way up on the highest setting.(This makes it easier to remove or replace the brush head or accesories.)Turn the belt lifter knob on the brush head all the way counter clockwise.Raise the headlight assembly to expose the brush head lock.Unlock the brush head and remove, then attach the hose to the machine, and lock it down. The hose is now ready to be used.
Note:When removing the brush head, make the belt lifter knob the fist thing you turn when removing it,and the last thing you turn taking it off.

Kirby Ultimate won't clean carpet

when you install the hose connector it trips a switch that switches the vac motor into high speed because the vac path is longer using the hose. check the belt after you remove the front. make sure the direction of rotation is in the direction of belt travel stamped in the impeller. try adjusting the head height

Cleaning upholstery with the Kirby?

it depends on the make of the kirby you are using but most kirby systems come with a portable shampooer and special shampoo. I would not recommend using your zip brush for shampooing purposes, the zippbrush is designed to loosen up dog hair, dirt, ect. when vacuuming. to shampoo upholstery do the following: remove bag from side of machine, place hose where bag goes, remove power head from front of the machine, place air intake valve on front of machine where power head was (intake valve kinda shaped like a pig nose with small holes on end) attach portable shapooer to end of hose and fill with water and kirby shampoo spray shampoo witch is foamy looking on whatever you are shampooing, rub into fabric w/a brush and let sit till dry. when dry turn kirby back into a hand held vacuum by putting powerhead back on front of machine and putting bag back on side of machine, then vacuum furiture. (make sure it is 100% dry before you vacuum because Kirby is not a wet vac!) Hope this helped ya out a little
