Put the file in a folder called upgrades and manually search for it from the tv. this is how you force an upgrade on a philips television.

Phillips 42 inch television

It sounds like a short in the menu button, most likely the one on the TV itself (though it could be the remote). To rule out the remote, just remove the batteries from it and see if it still does it - it probably will.

Fortunately, this should not be too hard to fix. You'll need to remove the faceplate around the menu button, and then look at the wires. Somewhere between the button and the board those wires connect to, you should find a spot where two bare wires or connectors are close enough that they almost touch. It may be that the wires are stripped somewhere, or that one of the connectors is bent over towards the other. If it's stripped wire, wrap it in electrical tape. If it's a bent connector, bend it back (and possibly wrap it in electrical tape as well).

Either something's causing the wires to move just enough that they occasionally touch, shorting, and thus the TV registers it as the menu button being hit, or they are close enough that the power occasionally arcs from one to the other, with the same result. Separating and insulating them should do the trick.

How do you update software?

Note some people seem to have said, in those search results, that the updated software was worse than the original. So you might want to read those first before you try to update.

Good Luck.

Philips flat screen tv reboots

Try sticking in a blank but empty USB memory stick into the USB port.... have the real remote (philips not a universal) ready... Go into the TV Menu..Select Software Update, then select Update Assistant.... then right click over to start now... It will write an HTML file to the memory card.. wait for it to say done,(been awhile since iv done it), plug it into your PC/Mac and open the file on the USB stick.... if you need an update it will check for it... download the update and the instructions to your desktop (might be compressed, if so open it and copy the files according to the readme.... stop the stick (eject) in Windows or the mac equivalent... pull it out of the pc.. turn OFF the tv and insert...

This can very likely stop the reboot loop.. Iv seen mentions of some tv firmware revisions having this problem.

Can't get sound through my hdmi

Try the easisest route first - unplug and replug HDMI cable into same port or the other hdmi port on the TV. Also, make sure the Monster cable isn't HDMI 1.3 - I'm not sure the HDMI ports on this tv are fully compat with 1.3.

If that fails, go to, enter your model number, click on the verison of your model ending in /37, and click on "Software & Drivers"; click on the link that says "Firmware Upgrade - Software" - read the specs and see if it says anything about audio loss on HDMI - many Philips have issues with the HDMI ports - they are not broken, but just need a software fix. Instructions are on the same page - make sure you only transfer the .upg file, not the entire zip file to a portable memory stick.
Here are the notes I see:
Following problems are solved :
• Availability cablecard channel map.
• Improved info in the service menu.
• Improved picture quality and stability on HDMI.
• Installation of channels.
Following problem is solved :
• Issue related to intermittent video loss is solved.

Resetting philips 42pf9730a/37 remote

Most of the problems with the Philps 42" plasma (other than fuses) can be fixed with a firmware update.
If you have a PC and internet connection you can download the firmware and tranferit to a 1 gig USB memory stick. turn off the TV insert the Memory st, turn on the TV and it automatically recognises the stick will go into upodate mode with on screen instructions for the user.
They have had problems in the past with HDMI and volume, HD pixel problems, all of which got fixed in these updates.
It is very intuitive and if you have the slightest PC savy, anyone can do it.
