Forget the in-pano function and use a free stitching program off the internet. When shooting panoramas, you need to be in aperature priority or manual mode so as to keep the exposure consistant, especially going into the sun or away from it in your pictures. Although this is good practice, it is not needed for a few stitch programs as they average out all the exposures and make the entire pic uniform. This works pretty good in all but the most demanding exposure swings.

It is not a good idea to manipulate files on the card just to save the transfer time. Flash cards can only be written a limited (though large) number of times. Because you can't delete a file without writing to the card, it is more prudent to copy all files from the card, then erase all of them at once.

The panorama function on the Olympus Smartmedia card is a header on the card that allows the Panorama function to work on the camera, displaying "helper" lines on the LCD display and fixing the exposure to the first shot taken. Photos taken with the panorama function can be stitched together using the Camedia Software supplied with your camera.
