Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive
I bought the 500 GB My book after X-mas and started loading the drive as a bootable external drive using the OS CD's and the startup selection program recognizes the 500 GB but won't boot from it.
Western Digital FW hard drives are NOT bootable for Macs. I bought one of their 320 GB FW HDs specifically to be able to create a bootable backup (via CarbonCopyCloner). The Macintosh HD clones just fine, and the WD drive even appeared to be recognized as a valid startup disk in System Preferences, but all attempts to restart with the WD drive as the actual startup drive failed. I subsequently contacted WD who eventually (after several go arounds of inane, irrelevant questions) admitted that their FW HDs have been "modified" to render them non-bootable!
I kept the WD drive for storage but promptly bought a LaCie 500 GB quad interface and that boots my G5 just fine.

I picked up a couple of My Books lately( via Ebay), and noticed that i can not get them to work on the Firewire interface with my Dual Core Intel Mac. Shows up on USB2.0 fine however.I found an online reference that said Apple changed some things on the Firewire interface year or two ago, and that vendors had to update their firmware (it related to Firewire devices reporting a unique ID to the Mac).

Both my 500G drives work on Firewire! (Intel Core Duo iMac) Every now and then they wouldn't until a recent Firmware update from Mac! Now fine.
