Reformatting an SD memory cardf

You can format the card in your camera while not connected to your computer. In fact it's recommended to do so. Read your instruction book to find out how. It should be a selection available from your "menu" button when in image review mode. Select "low-level" or "full" format, not "quick" format (quick format is only good for erasing pictures).

Got a 'Card needs reformatting' message on my Vivitar 8320 2Gb SD Card after downloading to my PC direct via a PCLine Model 1#-PCL CR400 reader. Agree most recommend reformatting using the camera and not a card reader / PC combination but my 8320 manual - whilst saying 'Reformat the card' only gives info on how to do this with loss of all stored images ! Obviously (?) I couldn't then easily save to PC from the SD card. After removing and inserting a known 'good' card as a check of the camera and then using the 'faulty' card again and switching on & off a couple of times all was restored to normality however ! Some sort of auto-reformat working in the camera ???
