Re: cannot connect my wifi laptop to the wireless router

If you use your original Win XP disks, there's a chance you now have XP SP1 (Service Pack 1). Make sure you've made all the necessary Windows Updates as working with WiFi networks was enhanced with XP SP2. Then you can try to find your wireless network and connect to it. If you had a secured network you'll need your previous network key (similar to a password, but without a username, the wireless key is needed to exchange data with the router) If you can't remember the settings on your Linksys you can reset it to factory settings with inserting something into the reset hole to press the hidden buton and holding it for several seconds until lights on the front flash. Then you HAVE to run the initial install procedure (find your CD and Quick Start sheet) because your router will be open and unsecured.

I just reformatted the pc, it can no longer connects to wireless network

to connect to a wireless network you need to have the WEP or WPA key that depends on your router. if you don't have any kind of key or passcode needed to connect maybe you don't have the drivers for your Wireless/Wifi Adapter. After reformatting your computer you must reinstall all of your device drivers so that you can use all of your devices.

My wireless has suddenly lost connection. My wired works perfectly.

If the wireless has stopped working, but wired can, either your wifi modem on your laptop needs to be reset or the wifi router has to be reset. Make sure you have restarted your laptop and unplugged the wifi router.

How to connect new laptop to router

In order to set up the wireless client, you will need to know the service set identifier (SSID), the Wireless Encryption Protocol (WEP) key and the channel and mode.
Boot up the laptop and plug in the WiFi card. This will not be necessary if your laptop has an integrated WiFi card.
Install any drivers needed to use the WiFi card. Insert the disc that came with the WiFi card and follow the on-screen installation process. Most discs will trigger a new hardware wizard that makes installation extremely simple.
Double-click on the "WiFi Connection" icon. It can be found in the system tray at the bottom of the laptop screen.
Click on "Properties."
Select the "Wireless Networks" tab.
Use the "Add" button at the bottom of the dialog if your WiFi network isn't in the "Available Networks" section.
Click on "Configure" when you see your network's SSID in the "Available Networks."
Enter your network's SSID and WEP key.
Click on "Start," then choose "Connect To" and "Wireless Network Connection." Your computer should now be able to access the WiFi network. If the WiFi network is connected to the Internet, it should also be able to connect to the Internet.
Hope it helps, if so do rate the solution
Good luck

I just reformatted my dell 8400 and lost my Linksys g router conn

After reformatting your dell 8400, did you reinstall all drivers of your devices? The linksys router won't be affected by the reformat. Your computer should still get connection from your router. This is a dell issue. If you have another computer connected and working with the router, that means the router is still functioning. Call Dell or linksys technical support. If they cannot help try this

Configuring WRT54G

there are many ways to setup/configure a wireless router. the easiest way for me is to plug your modem to the router, (even though unplugged, there should be a wireless network signal on your device that has a wifi but no internet connection) once connected, plug the modem to the wireless router then reset it, wait a few seconds then you'll get an unsecured network with internet access on it. usually, the only use for the cd is to make you configure it easier like putting a password on it etc.

Reformatted and now cant connect to my router

Hey mate,

few things,

can u see the wireless network name, when you search for wireless networks?

Does your wifi have any security settings [WEP/WPA] if so have u entered it correctly when u joined the network?

Have u installed the correct drivers for the wireless? some time incorrect drives will not allow the machine to connect to the wifi network. So double check that, and do a reinstall if necessary.

Report back if you can,

Hope it helps

It really depends on what "modem" Orange provided you with and how your personal PC is connected to the modem.

If the "modem" provided by Orange uses WiFi (such as Livebox) networking, then it is a matter of setting up your daighter's laptop to access and use the Livebox WiFi Network. In this case no router is needed since your modem is also a router.

If your PC is connected via Ethernet port to the "modem" and Orange's "modem" is a single Ethernet output port, you would need an AP/Router (Wireless since I am presuming the your daughter's laptop would be accessing the Internet wirelessly) such as the LinkSys WRT54G.

If your PC is connected via USB port to the "modem" and Orange's "modem" has only a USB output port (no Ethernet), you need to make your PC as the default gateway/software router and share your PC's Internet connection. If you are connecting your daughter's laptop using Ethernet cable, then you don't need a WiFi AP/Router but an ordinary hub. If on the other hand the new laptop would connect wirelessly, you would still need something like the WRT54G.

Hope that this be of some help/idea. Pls post again how things turned out or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
