It does not reconnise that i have inserted my memory stick! & it only has a CD Reader NOT rewriter. Plus it only has a dial up modem installed. I now have broadband with(AOL) .So is there a way of transfering files to my Laptop !!!! i have been told that the tower hasn't got plug & play ! so can i download the driver for my Memory stick & install it. Its a INTEGRAL 2GB stick. If so how do i get the driver & then install it ? thanks for any help with this one. Colin....

It's possible to get Windows 98 to recognize the USB memory stick, but there will be several technical problems to deal with.

A much simpler way may be to remove the hard drive from the tower and connect it directly to the laptop with an external USB-to-IDE adapter. In this configuration your files can be copied directly from the old hard drive to the laptop. Depending on your comfort level with working on the internal parts of your computer, you may need assistance from someone with computer service experience to do this. One example of the device you need is the "Bytecc BT-200 USB to IDE Cable with Power Adapter"....or you can search online to find this or similar devices by using the search terms USB - Hard Drive - External - IDE - Adapter. They are generally available for under $20.

Install the hard drive into an USB hard drive adapter case the plug this USB hard drive into the USB port in your laptop. The laptop will see it as an external storage device, open the various folders and copy the files to your laptop.
You can delete any unwanted files off this external USB hard disk and use it for backups and file transfer.

Is it possible to find an old computer running an old version of Windows, and then to connect the tape-drive to that computer, and then to copy the files onto a folder on that computer?

Then, if that computer has a network-card, you can "share" that folder, so that all computers on your network can then access that "shared" folder, i.e., to copy the files, and then to burn them to a CD-recordable.

I have a iomega eGo 500GB which I used on a dell laptop running Windows XP. I backed up all my files on the drive and now have a new laptop running Vista (old laptop has gone) put whan I pluged in the...

Enable "File and Print Sharing" on the "old" computer.

Connect the IOMEGA to the "old" computer.
Enable file-sharing on the "root" folder of the IOMEGA.

Connect the "old" computer to one of the LAN ports on a router (wired or wireless).

Connect the "new" computer to another LAN port on the same router.

Make sure that both computers are in the same "workgroup".

From the "new" computer, browse to "show computers in my workgroup".
You should see an icon for the "old" computer.
Double-click that icon to "open" that icon, and you should see all the files on the IOMEGA.

Copy those files to the 'C:' drive on the new computer.

I recently bought a Toshiba Satalite laptop to replace the one I dropped which was also a Toshiba Satalite. I had taken out the old hard drive and installed it in the new one but now it wont do anything...

Yes it does matter. XP was configured for the old Toshiba and this will only work if both Toshiba laptops are exactly the same model.
To get your new Toshiba operating, put the new hard drive with the Vista operating system back in the Toshiba laptop.
To transfer your data from the old hard drive, purchase a USB adapter hard drive case and place the old hard drive inside this case. This will then be an external USB hard drive.
Plug this USB hard drive into the new Toshiba's USB port and it will detect it as an external storage/hard drive. You can then open the various folders and files and copy the data files to your new Toshiba.
To free up disk space on this USB hard drive, delete the Windows folder, Program Files folder and other folders that are no longer needed.
Use this hard drive as a backup hard drive etc.

Hi there
Vista does not support that camera, you will have to use an XP machine to copy to, this is because there are many hardware and driver issues with Vista.

Thanks for using Fixya!!!!

Hi there. I see you are having a problem with your USB port for windows Vista. try going to your computer manufacturer website and look up your laptop series for driver downloads. What brand is the laptop? I have a IBM/lenovo ThinkPad T40 with Windows Vista on it and my USB ports work fine. Also how old is your laptop? Because it may have USB 1.0 and not 2.0. Mine is 2.0 and works fine in Vista.
