HP Deskjet 380 - wont print

My deskjet wont print - each time i press print i get an out of paper message - and there is plenty of paper. i have checked for paer jams and that the back is securely on. there appears to be no obstruction to paper feeding in. when the printer tries to print, it makes a screeching sort of noise. Previous HP inkjet printer used to do this but it was fairly easily cured by cleaning the guide tape where the cartridges ran but not easy to get to without diassembling - is this straightforward or once having got the top off will it go back together easily?
