maybe the software that you download is a 32 bit O.S only that's way it cos you and error. because your O.S
is not compatible to the software that you use. download a 64 bit driver twain

Try the following URL: http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0010070.asp Use the drop down menu to select your language and OS or scroll down to the appropriate version.

That gives the drivers only if I read it correctly. You should be able to use either Windows Fax and Scan or Paint to actually acquire the scans. If you want the Toolbox, you can try to see if the Vista version will load.

sounds like the scanner is skipping pixels. that is usually a sign of malfuncting. the best solution is get a new one. cost of getting new one is much cheaper to repair it.

I solved this problem by the following:

Don't scan from the Canoscan toolbar. Use an imaging program (I used Picasa), import from the Canoscan, and Scangear opens up. In the settings for Scangear, you can choose positive or negative film (use positive for slides). You can keep using Scangear, or after using it once, you'll see it has corrected the problem with the toolbar

I haven't solved the light problem, but I have found a pretty good program that allows me to enhance my scanned slides-pics into nearly slide-projector quality pics: XnView. I have found that it is best to not try to use the enhance program in PhotoStudio 5.5 (the driver-program for the Canonscan 4400F).

Check the cable that connects to the cover at the hinge end. If this is loose, the scanner will not allow you to scan film or slides.
