I bought this 6427GFF 2 years ago and all of a sudden it died. I cannot turn it on with the remote or with the power button on the set. If I listen closely to the back of the TV it is making a buzzing/whirring sound.

Do a reset to this set, and check. To make it a hard reset, just unplug the TV from AC mains wall socket, and re-plug it back after 15 minutes or so. This procedure will make it a hard reset. If you want to make it a system reset [Factory Reset]; you have to enter its service mode option, and select the factory reset option. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Service mode entry, adjust and exit procedure to many popular brand TVs are given. Never forget to exit the service mode, after all adjustments have been done.
Have the remote tested either with a tester that most shops have or in a dark room with a digital camera the display will faintly flash when remote pointed at it and buttons pressed.
Also if button does not work (power) unplug the set for a while to see if it will reset. If the tester shows same problem--no working for power or have to press ******* buttons 99% chance something got spilled onto remote and got inside
Invest in a long poking stick....... Either the Infrared receiver or controller it blew out. The high amount of static electricity formed and must of jumped off by the infrared receiver causing a momentary short in the circuit board. Safety's shut the tv down before frying, but damage looks to be done. It can be fixed, but only cheap if only the infrared receiver was damaged, anything else and it's going to be pricey.
some tv's default to channel 2 after being unplugged.since it is a older tv ,the buttons on the remote and the tv maybe worn down.on the tv itself try pushing the buttons down a liitle harder. if you have aux or line in/video inputs, scroll down on the channel button to log into a aux channel for the dvd player.as for the remote try buying a cheap universal remote to see if that works.
