Question about Vacuums

1 Answer

Vacuum cleaner blew the fuse in my house!!

I have an original electrolux 725 vacuum which was great up until a year ago. I had the cord fixed because it had pulled out too far and at the time the guy said something about the ball bearings. I didn't understand at the time that I would have to replace the motor soon. It did blow up a month or so later so I had the guy put in a new motor. It had a 12 month warranty and true to form, at 13 months I decided to use a powerhead for hair in the carpet and the motor blew up and at the same time blew the fuse in my flat.
Are the new motors just not as good as the originals (always seems to be the way) since the original worked for 25years without a problem then a new motor lasted just over a year or is there a good quality motor I can have fitted and if so, how much should it cost and where can I get it done? (i live on the gold coast) I love the old 725 but this is a pain!

The vacuum doesn't work at all now and I think the powerhead was the problem, but what I want to know is, is there a range of quality within the new motors that are around now? Ie, if I pay more money, or get someone else to fix it, am I likley to get a better quality motor or are all of the ones made now exactly the same? (I know it would have to be a 725 motor and therefore compatible rather than a different motor all together) The original lasted for 25 years but the new one lasted for 1 which makes me think the new ones are inferior, at least the one I got anyway. The powerhead was also an original so it definately wasn't too strong for the vacuum.
The advantage is that this guy offers a waranty so if they are all the same, I guess I'll just go back to the him and use it as much as I can with the powerhead in the 12 months and see if it blows up again. At least I have changed my apartments fuses from the old copper wire, makes it easier!!

Yeah I was afraid of that!! They don't make stuff like they used to!!!

I have called some places about another vacuum cleaner with a powerhead and while the powerheads are stronger, a new vacuum motor is about $150 whereas the cheapest new vacuum cleaner (with a powerhead) is around $600.

If anyone can suggest a particularly good brand and model with a powerhead I would appreciate it!!

Thanks for all your help so far!!

Are you sure that the vacuum motor went bad? If it did, then if would just have to be replace again. Doubt that you would find a different motor other then what belongs in there. If you did it would have to the right size to mount right. Some motors will last a long time while others just don't and you never know how long a one will last. Maybe the power head is what caused your present problem.

The problem is that the older E-lux vacuums, the orginal motors are not available anymore, so a sub was found, but I don't know that they are better or not. But with your motor problems, maybe you should invest in a new one, like fixing an old car, you can keep pouring money into it. Also there are other parts on it that are no longer available. So I guess you have to decide whether it is worth fixing or not.

There are alot of good brands out there that are cannisters with a power head. Just remember you get what you pay for, but you should look around and see what there is out there.

SOURCE: My Electrolux Oxygen3 powerhead needs

Unfortunately the only way to clear the roller is painfully clipping and pulling. If you do happen to remove the roller, it's really alot of trouble to put it all back together.

How do i fix dyson DC41 Animal vacuum upright cleaner it has burning smell coming from motor and it blew the fuse box when i WENT TO VACUUM. the wire flex is a bit over twisted

You most certainly shorted this out and will need a new cord. Easy fix but you will have to take it apart and find where it failed. I doubt the motor fried but it is possible. When you take it apart look for the burn mark left by the electrical arc. That is the point you fix.

What charge for this service?

Hi,

Actually there are no hidden screws on your Electrolux Epic model. This is the newer plastic body canister made by Aerus Electrolux. In order to open the vacuum cleaner to inspect the motor, first open the vacuum bag door and remove the vacuum bag. After the vacuum bag has been removed, keep the vacuum bag door open.

The two rubber furniture guards on both sides of the vacuum cleaner are actually what are holding the top housing and the bottom housing together. You'll need to slide both of these rubber furniture guards off in order to open the rest of the vacuum cleaner. They slide forward towards the vacuum bag housing which is why the door needs to be open.

In order to get these slides started, it's sometimes necessary to put a flat head screwdriver in between the back of the furniture guard and the start of the cord reel housing. Right after the rubber starts behind the word Electrolux. Fit a flat head screw driver in this gap, and it's sometimes easier to use a hammer, and hit the screw driver that's on the furniture guard facing the front of the vacuum.

With a little perseverance, you should be able to get the slide started, and when the slide starts to come out past the vacuum bag housing, simply grab the end of it with a pair of pliers, and pull the rest of it out of the vacuum.

Do this on both sides of the vacuum, and you'll be able to separate the two housings, and get access into the motor compartment.

If you have any problems, or would like me to take a few pictures of this being done, I'd be happy to do so. Please just rate my repair as helpful if you found this advice useful. I really do appreciate this.

Thank you,

Chris J.

Electrolux ambassdor will not run after pluggen in

Greeting from GoVacuum,

On all Electrolux canister vacuum cleaners, there is a kill switch, that will not allow the machine to turn on without a bag in it. Sometimes when replacing the bag, the bag is placed in a position where the switch is not being activated.

When you open the bag housing, it should look like this;

You'll notice in the bottom right corner of the bag housing, the kill switch to the vacuum cleaner.

Try plugging the vacuum cleaner in, and while you are pressing this kill switch down, turn on the vacuum cleaner. Does the vacuum cleaner turn on/off when you push/release the kill switch? If it does, simply just get a new bag, and make sure that the new bag is covering the kill switch, and close the door of the vacuum cleaner.

If it still doesn't start, let me know and I'll try to help you diagnosis the machine differently. I'd say that 6 out of 10 times, this kill switch is the problem.

I hope this helps you. Please email me with any questions, or if this fix doesn't make your vacuum work. I really enjoy sharing my passion, and expertise in repairing vacuum cleaners.

My Electrolux is about 3 years old. Never had any problems with it until recently, it is LOUD. It doesn't seem to make a 'normal' running noise unless it butts up against a wall, furniture, etc. trying to vacuum is like being on a jet runway. Is something clogged? Does it just have issues from not being used for about a year? (Last house had no carpet).

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.
It sounds to me that you have a broken fan, in every vacuum I have seen with the loud noise such as you described, it has been a broken fan or fan blade and is in need of replacement. You can try to do it yourself but I suggest going to your local vacuum cleaner dealer for service with the problem. Remember, a suggested belt change if the belt is flat would be 4 to 6 months and If you have a geared belt the belt change would be one year or better depending on wear factor. So, if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.
