Clicking sound when power is off

Gateway GT5058 makes a clicking sound, similar to the sound a hard drive makes when it's really working, is heard when the power is off. The clicking sound is heard through the system's external speakers if they are left on. The lights on the ethernet adapter light up as if there is network activity. Unplugging the power cord stops the sound, as does powering up the PC. It seems the clicking sound is coming from the power supply unit. Is it time to replace the power supply?

Have the power supply tested or use a diff power supply in your cpu, just to see if the clicking sound will disappear,if it disappear then a power supply replacement would be beneficial, if not then have your cpu check by a qualified tech to see where is that sound coming from

Gateway GT5058 no post, no beeps - power supply is OK, hard drive spins up, fron panel LED's light up.

Power-down the PC.
Remove all of the RAM modules.
Power-up the PC.
You SHOULD hear a series of Beeps. This is the Motherboard complaining that there is no RAM installed....this is normal.
*IF* you do NOT hear any Beeping, then the Motherboard is bad and would need replacing.....however depending on the age of the PC, it is usually not cost effective to do this, and sometimes you can't find just a Motherboard for sale and have to buy a whole used PC (same make/model,) and put your HD into it.

Post back with what the above test showed you.

Here clicking sound when powering up.

Clicking noises are not uncommon for hard drives, though it is really difficult to tell. I have drives that made no clicking noises just stop working, and I have a clicking Western Digital that has been chugging along for over 5 years now. If those clicks lead into grating metal on metal sounds, you need to back up that disk.

When i try to power it up it just makes a clicking sound

Open the side of the case and locate your hard drive. Pull the red-yellow-black power cable from the hard drive and see if you still hear the clicking noise when you start the machine up. If you don't, i believe your hard drive is toasted.

My Gateway used computer was working and now it won't boot-up and gives message that Hard drive connection is not good. The computer makes clicking or more of a tapping sound and now won't boot. thanks

It sounds like your hard drive has failed, IE.. the clicking/tapping sound. You could have the hard drive tested to be sure. You could swap out the hard drive to another machine and try it.

My computer won't work

most clicking sound are made by failing harddrive... check with gateway people again if it is still under warranty and ask them to replace the drive or fix it.

fyi -- if it is really the hard drive that is making the clicking noise... there is a big chance that you will loose your data

Laptop hard drive physical damage

If it's clicking then you may be out of luck. Sending it to a data recovery agency is really costly. You may (???) be able to get some files off the drive if you connect it to someone else's computer as a second drive. I've also heard that putting the drive in the freezer will sometimes let the drive work for a short period of time. But, IMHO the drive is toast.
