I need to change the password on the wireless router and was told I need to do this from the host CPU and not the laptop. I can't find my manual to walk me thru these steps. I see a lynksys icon but didn't want to change anything that might result in disrupting connections already established.

You will need to log into your router with the IP Address, userid and password, then you can change the router password.

You do realize that the Router Password just lets you get into the router to make changes to it.

The Wireless Password is what allows people to connect their wireless devices or laptops to the internet via the router. If you need to change the wireless password then once you get into the router go to the wireless tab or wireless security and change it.

The manual will give you the router's IP address, default userid and password. Also it might be on a sticker on the side or bottom of the router. The wireless password or network key might be on it also.

Get online and got to www.google.com In the google search box type: "Belkin Support" (without the quotes and put your manufacturer name before Support). Look for downloads and drivers. Enter your model number and operating system when requested. Look for Manuals throughout the site.

Some wireless routers have a web management page hosted by the router where you can change the password. You can access this by typing in the router's IP into the address bar on an internet browser. To get the IP of the router, on your PC, go to Start -> Run -> type cmd -> then type ipconfig /all. This will give you information on the network adapters on your PC. Find the entry "Default Gateway", this is your Router's IP. The router will ask you to authenticate using an account you set up along with a password. If you do not have these either you can access the admin account with a default password if you haven't change the admin's password. Here is a list of those. If you can't find you router or this does not work, most routers have a button on there exterior that will perform a factory reset. Hold the button down for 5-30sec and it will reset the router back to when you first bought it.

The router's password is a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA orWPA2 encryption key. The Passphrase generates the WEP or WPA or WPA2 encryptionkey and this is in the router's wireless settings. To connect to your wireless router, it needs the router'swireless settings configured ie SSID, WPA or WPA2 encryption key and also thewireless cards in all the laptops and or computers needs to be configured withthese router's wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktop computers cancommunicate with your wireless router.

Step 1:
Open a web browser such as Internet Explorer.
Step 2:
Go to the Address bar and enter your router’s IP address ("192.168.1.1" is the default IP of most Linksys routers) then press [Enter].
Step 3:
A new window will prompt for a User name and Password. Leave the User name field blank then enter your router’s password ("admin" is the default password), then click OK.
If you forgot the router's password you need to reset the router.
Step 4: Click on Wireless--->Wireless Security to view the Security type and the Key.

This is correct. It has to do with your router. Does it ask you for a password when trying to connect to the wireless network? If yes then you have set up or the router has enabled wireless encryption. You need to know how to access your router's configuration page and get the password there. Then you can use that to connect with your laptop.

Also changing the channel on the wireless router will also help boost your connection. I suggest get the manual or contact the router's manufacturer to learn how to access the configuration page of this device.

I presume that your internet was working fine before you bought your new laptop. Unless you've done something to change it it should still be working as before.
You shouldn't need a CD - if you think about it you don't need a CD when you log in in Starbucks so why should you need one at home?
The only thing you need to know is the router's wireless name; Talktalk 12345etc, and its password - which is the password your son is using.
I can't explain why you can't connect when your son is connected - as the router should be able to host 253 laptops (very very slowly mind) - unless the router has been set with an access list that only allows his laptop to connect.

get your router name and go through manual setup, your brother may have accedentally made your wireless network hidden, to change that go to http://192.168.1.1 or .0.1 and log in and chang the settings to default

change the wireless passphraase under router admin page u can get there via gateway adress of your computer if u are connected with network cable

Hi you need to go into internet explorer, in where you would type www.ebay.com for example you type 192.168.1.1 im sure thats correct one for your router, but if you know the routers ip address just put it in, hit enter
a menu will appear asking for username and password
usually - admin , password - password
or
admin ,admin
you will find correct setting in manual if you still have it,
once you get in, click on wireless settings, in there you can change the wireless channel quite easilly..

I'm pretty certain that you can only have 1 host per computer/per name for a network. So, if you want to change the laptop as host you will have to setup a network under the settings. Create a network password along with the network name for that laptop. (Unidentified Network) is a correct network name. It's just that you probably didn't change it to a specific name that you wanted it to be in the box. after doing this, you should be able to go to the other computer's and try to log onto the network domain that you have created. after that in order to get approval to access the network domain you have to enter the encryption key which is the network password. you have to do this to all non hosted computers. after completion, you should be connected to that specific network.

Now you want you're desktop to be the host. Well, from above do the same steps for the desktop. But, instead of (in example) to lets say your laptops network name is (Home). Well, you would have to make the host name on the desktop to be (Home2). then set the encrption key. Then go to all non hosted computers including the laptop that you made the first network. because this is a new hosted network created by you're desktop and connect to that network and then supplying the encrption key to be able to access the network. and you should be good. Just my 2cents. although this may not work because you may have to have to routers to be able to create multiple networks but, like you mentioned earlier you have a wireless on you other laptop you can use the setup for that wireless to make another network.
