To connect to your wireless router, it needs the router’s wireless settings configured and also needs the wireless cards in all the laptops and or computers to be configured with the router’s wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktop computers can communicate with your wireless router.

To set-up and secure the wireless router from unauthorized access, follow these steps: -
1. Connect the wireless router to your computer with a LAN cable.
2. Start your browser and enter the router's configuration URL IP address.
3. Enter the router setup, login and password
4. Change the admin password
5. Go to the wireless settings and change the default SSID and turn off SSID broadcast.
6. Setup encryption key the strongest is WPA2 (if not then WPA).
7. For further security measures - turn on MAC address filtering and enter the MAC address of the wireless cards on the computer/s you want to connect to this wireless router.
8. Record the settings you have made and keep it in a safe place and Save the settings.
9. Configure the wireless cards on the computer/s with the SSID and encryption settings of the router.
10. Remove the LAN cable between the router and the computer then the computers should be able to connect to the router wirelessly.

Change password

Try to factory reset the router by holding the reset button for ten seconds until all lights blink. Then connect a computer to the router via ethernet and open a web browser. Type in 192.168.1.1 if it is a linksys or cisco, 192.168.0.1 if it is a d-link or netgear, or 192.168.2.1 if it is a belkin. Netgear and d-link usually have a sticker with user id and passowrd to access the router. If it is the wifi passphrase you need, then go ahead and reset the router to factoy setting. To change the wifi password, you will need to go toe wireless security settings where they list the options for WEP, WEP2, etc.

Wifi password reset

Once you log into your router click on the wireless link.
On the bottom of the wireless page click security.
Here you can change your wifi security.
Once done just click apply and the that's it.

Note: Once you change the wifi security settings you will have to reconfigure your wireless devices with the new wifi security.

I want to stop my neighbors from using my router/modem, can you help me?

Hello

All you need to do is to to enable the router security, which will enable you to add a password.

HERE is how you do it:
Type 192.168.0.1 (this will get you in your router) and once you're in, go to the "Security" tab or option and click on WEP or WPA, select the encryption, choose a password and click save or apply.

Hope this can be of help.

Kind regards

I AM TRYING TO CONNECT TO MY NEIGHBOR'S ROUTER - I CAN SEE IT BUT WHEN I TRY TO CONNECT MY LAPTOP IT GIVES ME AN ERROR MESSAGE.

Your neighbor's router is probably set up with security (if they're smart, it is). You can see it when you scan for networks, but won't be able to connect unless you provide the proper pass phrase or hex key string. Depending on the wireless adapter in your computer, you may get a message explicitly saying you didn't provide the right key. Or you may get no message at all from the adapter, and just the browser error about not finding the server or "page can't be displayed".
