I have a 1994 ford ranger with a solid front axle, and button to push for 4 wheel drive. I went to push it, and the light didn't come on and the truck didn't respond. Is there an easy fix?

You didn't mention if it was 2 or 4 wheel drive so I went with a 2 wheel drive. According to hollander the 5 speed transmaaion fits a ranger (2WD) 1991 - 1994 and a Mazda B3000 1994 only. Hope this helps.....
If it is a push button four wheel drive system there should be a soft vaccum line the runs to your front end where your axle shafts are connected. There is a little box there which is what controlls your two wheel and four wheel. It's possible that the line is dry rotted and won't hold enough pressure to switch out of four wheel or also possible that the sensor there has gone bad as well.
I think yours has the automatic locking hubs that slide over the the rotor hub. If this is the case than what has probably happened is a u-joint has gone bad and wiped out that auto hub.
Be prepared for some sticker shock on those hubs. they are not cheap. The usual fix for this is to replace the front axle ujoints and what ever hub is making the noise, hopefully just one.
It sounds like you are driving in 4wd drive on dry pavement. The front drive axles do not work like the rear differential. When you turn, the outside front wheel must travel farther than the inside wheel, therefore they are traveling through the turn at differentspeeds. If you are on dry pavement, this causes the gears to bind. You don't notice this on slick surfaces because the outside wheel will slip instead of bind up the gears. You should not use 4wd on dry pavement. That's the advantage of push button, or shift on the fly, 4wd. You can shift back to 2wd when you encounter dry pavement. All wheel drive vehicles don't have this problem because they have a limited slip front differential as opposed to a locking differential on 4wd. Hope I didn;t confuse you too much.
Start out with buying yourself a $25 book from the Parts House. The I would go to the front HUBS, secure & safety vehicle before you do anything, Clean, Inspect, Lune & Repair front Hubs as required, get the brakes while you're there. Check your drive line, axles, u-joints etc. Clean , repair , replace as needed. Check for Tranfer case Operation. Is there power going to the front Axle when 4WD is engaged? do you feel a change when you engage the Transfer Case? Have you checked the Power on the circuits? Have you Manual or Auto-locking Front Hubs? Answer all those Questions & read before you do anything.
try the actuator in the front diff, it will be a plug in device that goes into the diff and engages when u push your button. fairly inexpensive part this will work i had the same issue last fall
