Re: Harmon Kardon reel to reel tape player

I have a Harmon Kardon TD-3 that I'm looking to sell. It's not in its original cabinet, but in a smaller box that takes up less space.

The belts you have replaced are used to operate the loading/unloading mechanism I assume. On the bottom of the cassette mechanism you will find the other from motor to idler wheel assy. or actual reel hub. Older cassette decks also used a belt to drive the tape counter mechanism.

Older cassette decks used belts from the motor to the capstan, another from the motor to an idler assy. or tape reels (FF & RR) and another belt driving the mechanical tape counter.

HI, I purchased new belts for my tapedeck (2 actually: a flat and a square one) but I don't know how to install them. The square belt is visible but I cannot find the flat one. Can you help me?

The flat belts are usually the one from the motor to the flywheel or "capstan." Most people don't realize this, but the capstan and pressure (pinch) roller is what actually drives the tape in the play mode. The reels are used to maintain tape pressure and perform rewind / fast-forward.

Tape players have several rubber belts in it and if we do not use them frequently belts loosen and become useless and they need to be replaced... . To accomplish this however you need some sort of handy man ability.. Take out the metal cover of the player by removing the screws on the sides .after removing the cover you can access the tape head /transport mechanism. if you look carefully to underneath of tape transport you will see the motor unit which belts will be there...check the belts for the moving mechanism and make sure the belts are not loosen / worn out or broken . You can replace it with a new one that may available in radio Shack stores. Take care..and let me know if it does not work out..

Most tape decks have sensors monitoring the reels to make sure they're moving. Otherwise a jam is indicated. Belts usually drive the reels and they get old, stretch and/or break.

Look inside it to verify.

Using a search engine go looking for the belts for your model and maybe even find videos showing how to replace them.

That is what WE do.

My harmon kardon hk 3475 has very poor sound, almost none at all. it does this through all inputs. if i hook up through the line input it sounds ok but i have to use the volume control on my mp3 to turn up...

Poor sound or low volume?

Sudden onset or always like this?

When you say this, "if i hook up through the line input it sounds ok ", what exactly do you mean? What alternatives are you using to Line Level inputs. All inputs except Phono are Line Level.

How does FM sound?

How is the MP3 player different than anything else, hook-up-wise? Do you have it jacked into the Main In? That would bypass all signal processing and selection in the receiver.

There should be jumpers between Pre Out and Main In. Are they there when you DON'T have the MP3 player plugged in there? If not, install a short pair of RCA cables between them.

Describe what is hooked to what in detail. Have you checked to make sure the Mute and Tape Monitor (T-Mon) are NOT active?

A manual is available for free download if you register with .
