Acer Aspire M3400 Desktop PC. Memory Upgrade Issue

please check the memory timing settings. if your mixing up ram they may not have the same memory timings and require you to go either higher or to the supported settings that either memory can use. for example if corsair runs at 8-8-8-14 and kingston runs at 10-10-10-16 then you will need to bump the settings to 10-10-10-16 since the computer is trying to set the timings for kingston to 8-8-8-14 which it does not support.

The 256MB SDRAM is showing as 128 MB SD RAM

if you have onboard graphics card that shares the ram memory with your graphics card then the configuration in the bios will determine how much memory is shared with your graphics card so you will lose memory there. Also windows xp does not always report the correct amount of memory so check with cpu z or wcpuid or another utility to check.
Also when you restart your computer when it detects the memory how much does it show that is installed there or if you go into the bios does it show the correct amount.
If it does not then it is not compatable and I would suggest going to and selecting / getting the correct memory by selecting the correct computer / motherboard that you have.

Long periods of hard drive activity

Most likely, it could be the amount of ram you have in your computer. If your running low on ram and it is using the virtual memory your computer can be running all the time causing a slow down in whatever you do. Check to see how much ram you have :)

IBM IntelliStation Z Pro 6221

Mayeb you need to repair the OS - In which case you will need to have SCSI Controller XP OS floppy driver obtained from IBM website.

Start up the computer booting up from the CD ROM. Then when it comes to "install thrid party devices" - press 'S' and insert the floppy with the SCSI Coontroller on it and follow the on screen instructions.

Windows xp problem

It seems you installed an outdated (16bit Program) for the ScanMaker 4. 16Bit applications/programs and generally DOS based (Windows 3.x and 95) and will not run properly from Windows XP.

First, check and download and install Drivers and Plugins for Windows XP.

You may need new 3rd Party Scanner/Image Applications that work in Windows XP. However, if you still want to use the 16Bit application then you will need to run the program in 16Bit Compatibility Mode. To do this, right-click the program executable or shortcut, choose propertise from the drop-down menu, go to the Compatibility Tab and put a tick in "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" From the drop down menu, choose Windows 95 or 98 and apply.

Finally, check the the User's Guide or ReadMe file(s) (if you have it) for more info. Especially, check the recommended OS for the Applications.

I might be wrong, but i think ScanMaker 4 has a SCSI interface. If this is correct, then your laptop or port replica must have a SCSI port. NB: SCSI is not the same as Printer LPT Port.

Can't Install Windows XP SP2

Judging from the age of your machine, it could be a bad CD drive, a bad motherboard, or the hard drive may have failed. I'd start with the basics and remove the side cover.
Check to see if the processor cooling fan is turning if it has one. Also check the fan in the power supply. Remove and re-seat the memory modules.
