Is there something else i can use to replace the felt seal without buying a whole new drum on a maytag neptune model MDE9700AYW

Hello,
On older maytag dryer's the felt seal wasa seperate part and not part of the drum..the problem is i do not know if the drum on the newer and older dryers is the same diameter they look similar in size but if it isn't exactly right may leave a gap where the clothes will get caught in...however the part number for that seperate felt seal is 314820

There is a felt strip that came out of inside the dryer. it popped out from under the rim of the drum part. can i get a replacement part? it the dryer still okay to use?

Yes it is replaceable . Screws up into top from door opening 2 or 4. 2 screws into front from inside case into front . Lift up and out . Felt fits in groove around bottom of plastic frame and drum just rubs against it .

- very loud squeaking sound

Hello JewettKann,

Typically, on the Maytag Neptune dryers, it is the felt gasket that is the cause and source of the noise you're hearing.

There is a felt gasket that runs all around the front and rear of the dryer drum and cabinet door edge (on the backside lip). As the dryer ages, this felt wears out and needs to be replaced to prevent the awful screeching sounds you'll experience, once the metal to metal contact becomes constant.

You can view the parts that need replacing at the following link (Item #17B on the drawing) Called a sound damper pad on some models.

This was a fairly common problem with the Neptune line. You can see for yourself by simply turning the drum with your hand and feeling and listening for the rubbing/grinding noise, along the top of the door opening.
If you can get the complete model number off your dryer, you can select the exact line drawing and parts list at the link below to make sure you're looking at your exact model.

Making a loud squeal when the dryer is running. Its not continuous and the clothes still dry. Its a stacked washer dryer combination neptune series machine.

This is a fairly common problem with the Neptune dryers. There are two (2) roller wheels at the front and rear of the dryer drum and a felt gasket that runs all the way around the front edge of the front of the cabinet that the drum edge sits on as it rotates around.

As these wheels and felt wears (they seem to wear more quickly for some heavy users), the metal lip of the drum will start to rub and wear on the metal lip of the cabinet. Those roller wheels at the rear and front of the dryer drum can also be the souce of this type of noise, but since you're going to have to remove the drum to gain access to the felt or the wheels, I find it best to replace ALL the wheels and the felt at the same time while I have the unit apart, since it's only a matter of time before the other wheels and/or the felt wear out and start singing their own lovely screeching song.

As always, the cost of repairs needs to be weighed against the age and condition of the machine and the cost for a new replacement appliance. My rule of thumb is when the repair costs exceed 60% of a brand new unit AND the age of the appliance is 10+ years - time to buy new. Otherwise, get an estimate or the cost of the repair parts and make the repair yourself.

The cost of this repair by a appliance tech can run around $250-300+ depending on how long this has been allowed to operate, as the drum and cabinet can get worn pretty badly over an extended period of time with this condition not being corrected.

It is a repair that a homeowner can undertake given you have some experience, patience and are willing to take the 2+/- hours it will require to get it done. Not to mention having obtained the replacement parts you need to get the repair accomplished. Hope that helps!

The dryer squeals (metallic sound) while drying clothes.

check wear pads around front of drum or rear depending on brand. Ge's are particularly prone to scraping sounds, but still one of my preferred brands. IF a ge, did it get any dents around the sides or back? The drum is close to the sides and a dent in right place will do it. Also the rear panel can push the drum forward rubbing in front.
Ge - wear strips in front, plastic bearing in rear center, replace both, inexpensive.
Whirlpool- felt pad and wear strip in front, felt seal in rear with roller support. check rear seal lube rollers
Maytag -roller in front and rear with front and rear felt seals. some designs have front drum support posts with wear pads. ck these.
Frigidaire (include some sold under GE name) rear bearing cup (plastic)-lube, front feltpad with wear plates if plates gone get new pad/wearplate asm.
Maytag and ge nomenclature tags are in rear .

a bearing in the back for your drum sounds like what you describe. It needs to be taken apart and the bearing lubricated with high temp grease
