Defrost timer board

I have checked both the defrost heater and defrost termination switch and they are good, but the freezer does not go into defrost. How do I initiate a defrost from the timer board.The part # for the boart is 2304099 (Whirlpool)

    lg bottom freezer is always unpredictable!!?!? many times its on a defrost cycle that we cannot figure out WHY??!!! we are upset opening the freezer to again see all of our frozen foods not so frozen! whats going on??? Help??? rob duffin 480-244-8242 email --- robduffin@gmail.com

    Amana side by side refrigerator: model # SBDE20S4SW. The compressor and the condenser fan is not coming on, but the evaporator fan is going.

If you pull off the bottom kick plate and there is a tech sheet that gives the procedure if its not there give me your model num and ill look it up for you

Ice buildup on evaporator coils


Can you locate the model number of your Kenmore? The number should look like this 521.345678 and located around the inside of the fresh food section door.

It could be that the defrost heater came on the time you were watching bugt may have a bad connection or a defective defrost element. You need to test the heater for continuity to assure that the element is not broken. the defrost timer and defrost thermostat being new eliminates that as being the problem so I think your element or the connection is the most next likely cause, Let me know I don't mind helping, Thanks Sea Breeze

I have a sub zero model 532 and the freezer does not work. I have turned the defrost timer to reset. I have also removed the control and checked find with ohm meter switch is recognized when switching off...

In older models, the timer runs continuously and roughly every six hours, shuts off power to the cooling system and sends power to the defrost heater. In newer models the timer advances only when the compressor or defrost cycle is running - an improvement for efficiency. As the timer advances, power to the heating element shuts off and power is restored to the cooling system. If the timer does not advance, the appliance will be stuck either in defrost or refrigerate mode, resulting in, respectively, no cooling or frost build-up.
The defrost timer is usually found behind the front grill of the freezer. It may also be found behind a cover plate inside the freezer, in the temperature control console, or behind the freezer near the compressor.
To test whether the defrost timer is simply failing to advance, locate the advance screw and turn it clockwise until you hear it click. This advances it to the next mode. If it was cooling before, it is now in defrost mode. Simply wait about 35 minutes and check whether it has left defrost mode and has resumed cooling (listen for the compressor). If it does not advance, the timer motor is probably bad and the entire timer needs to be replaced. If it advances as it should, then you can follow the steps below to test the switch electrically.
The timer is usually held in place with one or more screws. Remove the screws and gently pull the timer out far enough to disconnect the wiring connector. The connector can be removed by firmly pulling and rocking it left and right. It is not necessary to note the position of the wires because the connector plug is keyed so that it can be replaced in only one way.

Test the timer for continuity using a multitester. Set the multitester to the ohms setting X1. The timer has four terminals. Locate the common terminal, it should be labeled "3" or "C". HI. There are two causes here, in this situation. The most common will be a faulty defrost timer, or adaptive defrost control board. The defrost mechanism will vary from unit to unit. Most newer units will be equipped with an defrost control board. This will be located in the control housing, just above the heat shield, in the upper right had side. Older models will have a standard defrost timer mechanism. If this device fails, the evaporator heater Assembly will not receive the command to defrost the coil, on time. The easiest way to isolate the cause, will be to test the heater element. If the element is functional, the defrost timer/board, will be the culprit.

Defrost heater assembly test procedure:

The defrost heater is usually located at the back of a side by side freezer or under the floor of a top freezer. It will be necessary to remove obstructions such as the contents of the freezer, freezer shelves, ice-maker and the inside rear or bottom panel of the freezer, to access.

The panel may be held in place by retainer clips or screws. Remove the screws or depress the retainer clips with a small screwdriver. On some older top freezers it is necessary to remove the plastic molding to access the freezer floor. Removal of that molding can be tricky, so try not to force it, if possible. If you decide to remove it, you do so at your own risk. it will break, if forced. Warm it first with a warm towel, or hair dryer, set to low heat.

There are three primary types of defrost heater elements; exposed metal rod, metal rod covered with aluminum tape or a wire coil inside a glass tube. All three elements are tested in the same way.

The heater is connected by two wires. The wires are connected with slip on connectors. Firmly pull the connectors off of the terminals (do not pull on the wire). no it is not normal, your defrost termination switch is stuck or contacts are welded together, termination switch is there to protect from overheating of freezer, defrost timer puts system into and out of defrost but termination switch keeps the heaters from over heating the area, chances are you will need a defrost timer as well, manufactures recommend you change both when one or the other goes bad, also clean your condenser coil and make sure good ventilation around fridge bet there are lots of dust bunnies and plastic bags between the counter and fridge

Freezer side stops defrosting.


has the defrost timer been replaced? if not, that'd be the next step. there are only a few parts in that line: the power, the sensor, the timer, and the heating element. also, if the condesate drain is plugged, water stays pooled under the coils and freezes again.

Ge sidebyside, made in May,'02. It is not keeping things cold on either side. I have a thermometer in the freezer side and it is reading45 degrees. I have cleaned out the back and vacummed out the dust and...


I could be the same thing but there are three components to the defrost system. And this is somthing you can probably do yourself.
check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

You have a defrost system problem. Defrost is controlled by a timer which energizes the heater circuit. The heater circuit has a radiant or cal rod type heater which melts the frost from the coil. When the coil reaches a temperature where all ice would be gone a termination switch opens and shuts of the heater. The timer will continue to run until defrost time expires (18-22 minutes).

If you can locate the timer there is a clutch head screw to advance the timer to the defrost position. Turn the screw clockwise SLOWLY until you hear one audible click. The heaters should come on and defrost take place. If the unit restarts after the 18-22 minute period the timer is good, if it does not restart advance the screw to a second audible click and it will restart.
If you had to turn the timer the to second click to get it started cooling replace the timer.

If the unit restarted after the 18-22 minutes and defrost did not happen your problem is in the heater circuit. This would be an open heater or bad defrost terminator switch. To access the heater and defrost terminator the back panel in the freezer section must be removed. With an Ohm meter you can check the heater to see if it is good.
