this seems to be a common problem for this machine. I would love to know how the others fixed the problem. There is nothing in there. I have found that there is a problem with the motors on these machines. But how do you tell if its the motor, the clutch, transmission, .............. Its the motor itself that clunking. I have it out and plugged back in on the floor, it jerks and clunks. so now the problem is the replacement motor doesnt wire up the same, (GE discountinued the original motor)

  • harleycat Jan 11, 2008

it was easy. I took the motor out, plug the wires back in. and pushed the washer button to start a load, and it filled up and tried to spin. The blogs I was reading suggested transmission and clutch. And the motor replacement is a motor with a clutch assembly unit. And I was looking at the picture of the transmission unit, which isn't the problem. I'm guessing the board might need to be replaced, or the motor, but I don't know which one. they are both expensive. I love my washer, its only about 4 years old. DETAILED APPLIANCE ILLUSTRATION

Whirlpool wtw5100sq0 clunks when put on spin cycle

Does the washer currently work fine aside from the loud clunking noise? Does the clunking noise continue or is it just one loud clunk when it starts to spin? If its just one loud clunk then that is not a problem just ignore it as that is the clutch spring releasing, it probably starting making noise from the grease getting washed off when the washer over filled.
However how did the washer overfill? That issue should be addressed too. Sometimes though, if the tub is not centered from a heavy load the water will spill over the back but its not really an overfill.

Wash machine won't spin all the time and makes a loud banging noise.

Check to make sure that your clothes are not piled to one side causing the load to be off-balance. If that does'nt fix it then, It may be that your machine has a balance stabilizer on it that has worked its way loose or even off.

Clunking/thumping with spin cycle, reduces as spin speed increase

It's hard to tell without looking at the washer. But my first response would be that the transmission is wearing out. Inside the plastic cover for the adgitator is a metal drive stem. This assembly has a pulley on the bottom where your motor attaches to; inside the bottom of your washer. It is quite common after many years that these go bad. Have you ever noticed unexplained grease or other stains on your clothes after they came out of the wash?

Washer won't agitate or spin out.

Well it is ethier Belt, Cluch ,motor ,Or transmission. But it does sound like your transmission . The loud clunk is the brake in the gear case ( Trans.). It might have broken off.

"howling" noise during spin cycle (still there after changing burned off belt)

Travioso, there was two service flashes out on this model concerning the seal and bearing which means they had an issue with this washer. The howling noise you are hearing is the bearing and will need the new designed triple seal and bearing kit. This should be covered under your warranty, I believe it is 5 years. The numbers for the service flashes are TDL-0048A-B. Call Maytag and inquire about these service flashes, these should be covered. Catriver.
