Question about HP OmniBook XE3 Notebook

1 Answer

Can't figure this one out

I took my notebook in and had, what was supposed to be, a upgrade to the memory (which I don't think happened- only a microsoft upgrade), a new CD/DVD player installed. I've a SMCW 802.11g Wi-Fi program on here that was working fine until the tech got a hold of it. I took it back to him telling him my CD ROM didn't work nor did my SMC wi-fi program. Still now everything keeps telling me : SMC- I'm told "windows sockets???"... CD/DVD player- I'm told "windows sockets failed initialing". Got any clue what to do?

Re: can't figure this one out

The modem/lan minipci module is faulty. from there you have that error messages and also from here you can't access your lan and again (guess) you don't have sound. very strange but true.
what you have to do is to remove the lan/modem minipci card (baterry to the right) and everything you be OK.
and if I remember correct the spare part number is: F2300-60914.
if that doesnt work try this:
entered the bios setup utility and changed the settings for the parallel port to simple port ( no ECP no Bi-directional)
this way it saves resources for the mini pci card that reports the conflict

Without a bios update and updated operating system the ram may not work properly. Also the memory itself may be faulty.Verification of compatibility doesn't really guarantee the ram will actually work properly when seated. You should have used 2 pc2100 ram sticks.

Can't upgrade memory past 1gb when max is 2gb

I have the same issue with my laptop. I have not been able to get the laptop to accept 2gb of memory yet, but I did find something that works. If you put your 512mb memory that works in the laptop and then add a 1gb stick in the second slot it works. Or at least it did for me. It's better than nothing. I am still trying to figure out how to get it up to the 2gb max. Will add a solution if I figure it out.

If you replace the HDD, there is no reason why system hung up. try cleaning your memory cause on that case i can pinpoint that memory something wrong. try cleaning memory fixed it again, if your don't mind maybe you need to replace the memory.

if the same happen, try examine CD Disc or your cd rom drive cannot read the files on the disc.

(Option solution)Examine your motherboard after clear prove that the above solution is not working. i can assure u that main board is good. if ever it was damage that causes overheating.

The second memory slot is under the keyboard.
Remove two screws at the bottom.
Move downwards 4 switches at the top of the keyboard betwwen these letters (es-f1, f4-f5, f8-f9, f12-del) and raise it from the top.
Be careful not to remove keyboard ribbon-band.
There it is!!!!
Replace memory as standard.
Reverse procedure to set laptop to normal.

Acer Aspire 3000 Notebook - major memory problem!!

it sounds like the memory, try removing the new memory from the notebook and see if there are any errors, if not then that stick is ok, try just your new memory in the notebook and leave out your old memory, if the same problems you know its the new memory, if there are no problems, then the two sticks wont work together.

I want to know if I can upgrade the harddrive and memory

Depending on the memory you already have you can install upto a maximum of 1GB 266MHZ DDR, and cannot see any reason for not being able to upgrade your hardrive for a bigger one, but be aware that the Operating system backup will probably be on a seperate partition on your current hardrive, unless you got an installation cd with your laptop.
