That error can also be the purge or cleaning assembly on the right where the printhead parks is jammed. Cleaning with a wet Q-tip helps that area and you need to push back the squeegees if the pads below them are stuck. Check for any paper caught in that area.
That belt could just be an extra, there's a belt that drives the carriage back and forth, and another on the far left that turns the platen roller, there should be none in that area as the purge assembly is driven by gears. Try just cleaning the extra ink off the purge and squeegees, and cleaning the encoder strip. With that extra piece removed you may have solved your problem. I'll check the parts list again, but no belts in that area.

12 blinks . . download of users guide indicates "service", which could be the paper feed mechanism or logic board . . these days, it's probably cheaper just to replace the printer . .just hate to do it though . .so I thought I'd ask teh "community" if there is any other fix....
Thanks for your prompt reply.. Busy weekend for me . . but here's what happened re your suggested "fix" . . . to get to the waste ink area I had to get the printhead carriage to the middle . .but it would not move by itself at all . . Finally, by taking off the side panel of the cover, I was able to twiddle the gears and free it up . . but the short belt (about the size of a medium rubber band) was no longer connected to any pulley/gear assembly and just lying beneath the printhead in the waste ink area. I finally manged to pull the entire cover off (wow! very clever engineering there) but sill can't access the gears/moteor pulley area . .so I am in the proud possession of a belt . . . yikes! Not particularly optimistic about a fix for this iP4000, but I thought I'd at least bring you up to date . .
I need to know how many blinks, that is a service error, but how many times does it blink orange-green between the longer greeen blinks?
